Thesis Abstract

The escalating mental health challenges and socio-emotional difficulties faced by adolescents globally underscore the urgent need for effective resilience-enhancement strategies within guidance and counseling practices. This study aims to develop a comprehensive model for enhancing resilience among adolescents through an integrative guidance framework that combines cognitive-behavioral therapy, strengths-based approaches, and socio-emotional learning principles. The specific objectives include identifying key resilience factors in adolescents, examining the impact of an integrated guidance framework on resilience levels, and validating a functional model that can inform practice and policy. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative and qualitative approaches to ensure thorough exploration and validation. The quantitative component follows a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design, involving a sample of 300 adolescents aged 13-19 from four secondary schools in a metropolitan area, selected through stratified random sampling. Participants in the intervention group undergo a structured, eight-week integrative guidance program, while the control group receives standard guidance services. Data collection instruments include a validated Resilience Scale for Adolescents (RSA), a Guidance and Counseling Practices Questionnaire, and interview protocols for qualitative insights. The reliability of quantitative tools is confirmed via Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.85, and validity is established through expert review. Data analysis involves descriptive statistics to profile participants, followed by inferential techniques such as multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) to examine differences between experimental and control groups, adjusting for baseline scores. Thematic analysis is employed to interpret qualitative interview data, providing contextual understanding of adolescent experiences and perceptions regarding resilience development. The study also involves model specification using structural equation modeling (SEM) to validate the proposed integrative guidance framework, with fit indices such as CFI, TLI, and RMSEA used to evaluate model adequacy. Expected findings include significant improvements in resilience scores among adolescents who participate in the integrative guidance intervention, demonstrating the efficacy of the model in fostering socio-emotional competence and adaptive coping strategies. The study anticipates identifying core resilience factors influenced by integrated guidance practices, such as self-efficacy, emotional regulation, and social support. Qualitative insights are expected to reveal participants' perceptions of guidance efficacy, contextual factors influencing resilience, and personalized intervention elements. The validated structural model is expected to confirm the theoretical underpinnings linking integrated guidance practices to resilience enhancement, aligning with Bandura’s social cognitive theory and Egeland’s resilience framework. This research contributes novel insights into the design and validation of a culturally sensitive, evidence-based guidance model tailored to adolescents' developmental needs. It provides a pragmatic framework for school counselors, policymakers, and stakeholders aiming to integrate multidisciplinary principles into resilience-building initiatives. It advances the theoretical understanding by synthesizing cognitive-behavioral, strengths-based, and socio-emotional learning paradigms within a unified model, filling existing gaps in literature regarding holistic approaches to adolescent resilience. The study concludes that an integrated guidance framework can significantly improve resilience levels in adolescents, fostering their capacity to navigate psychosocial stressors more effectively. Recommendations include adopting the model in school guidance programs, training counselors in integrative practices, and conducting longitudinal studies to assess sustained impacts and scalability. Future research suggested involves exploring digital or peer-mentoring extensions of the framework, and examining its applicability in diverse socio-cultural contexts to enhance generalizability and developmental adaptations. Ultimately, this study provides a scientifically validated, practically implementable model to promote resilience in adolescents, contributing meaningfully to guidance and counseling theory and practice.

Thesis Overview

This research aims to develop a practical model that can help adolescents build resilience, which is their ability to cope with challenges and stress. Adolescents face many difficulties such as peer pressure, academic stress, family issues, and mental health concerns. Strengthening resilience can help them navigate these challenges more effectively, leading to better mental health and overall well-being. The study addresses a gap in existing guidance and counselling practices. While there are numerous programs focused on adolescent mental health, few integrate multiple guidance techniques into a comprehensive framework tailored for resilience building. This research proposes an integrative guidance framework that combines counselling, peer support, and life skills education, grounded in resilience theory and social learning theory, to provide a holistic approach. The researcher will first review existing literature to understand what strategies have been used and their limitations. Following this, a quantitative research design will be adopted. The target population will be adolescents aged 13-19 in secondary schools, with a sample size of around 300 students selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representation. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires measuring resilience levels, perceived support, and coping skills, both before and after intervention. The intervention will involve implementing the developed guidance framework over a three-month period. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to understand baseline characteristics and inferential statistics such as paired t-tests or regression analysis to evaluate the framework's effectiveness. The anticipated outcome is that adolescents participating in the program will show significant improvements in resilience scores compared to those who do not, demonstrating the framework’s potential. The study's contribution lies in providing a tested, theoretically grounded model that schools and guidance counsellors can adopt to enhance adolescents’ resilience. Ultimately, the research expects to recommend a replicable and adaptable framework that strengthens adolescent mental health and coping capacity, addressing a crucial need in educational and counselling contexts.
