Coastal fishing communities significantly depend on freshwater resources for their livelihoods, but increasing environmental pressures, population growth, and poor water management practices threaten the sustainability of these vital water sources. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of current water management practices in promoting sustainability within coastal fishing communities, with a focus on identifying both traditional and modern approaches that support environmental conservation and community wellbeing. The specific objectives include examining the types of water management practices employed, assessing community awareness and participation levels, evaluating the environmental and socioeconomic outcomes of these practices, and proposing integrated strategies for sustainable water use. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates qualitative approaches to explore community perceptions and practices, alongside quantitative analysis to measure the impact of current interventions. The population comprises residents and fishers in three coastal fishing communities with populations ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 inhabitants. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 150 households for quantitative surveys, with purposive sampling selecting 20 key informants for in-depth interviews and 3 focus group discussions to gather contextual insights. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires, interview guides, and observational checklists, designed to capture socio-economic data, water usage patterns, and community perceptions of water management. The validity and reliability of instruments were ensured through pre-testing, expert reviews, and calculating Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, averaging above 0.8 for reliability. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests to compare pre- and post-intervention scenarios, and multiple regression analysis to identify key determinants influencing sustainable water practices. Qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis, identifying recurring themes and patterns in community perceptions, cultural practices, and attitudes towards water conservation. The study will also apply the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) theory and the Social Capital Theory to interpret the environmental-economic interactions and the role of community networks in water management. Expected findings indicate a mixed landscape of traditional practices such as community-based water conservation and modern interventions like rainwater harvesting, with varying degrees of community participation and effectiveness. Evidence is anticipated to show that communities with higher levels of social capital and environmental awareness demonstrate better water conservation outcomes. The research will reveal gaps such as inadequate policy enforcement, limited access to sustainable technology, and insufficient community education, which hamper long-term water sustainability. This study contributes to knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of diverse water management strategies in coastal regions, emphasizing the importance of integrating community-based approaches with technological innovations. The findings will inform policymakers, environmental practitioners, and local communities, highlighting the need for participatory governance, capacity building, and sustainable practice adoption to enhance water resilience. The main conclusion underscores that sustainable water management in coastal fishing communities depends on multi-stakeholder collaboration, tailored community engagement, and the integration of indigenous knowledge with modern technology. Recommendations include institutional strengthening of water governance, expansion of community-led water conservation programs, and increased investment in sustainable water infrastructure. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts of these interventions and expand to other coastal regions to generalize findings across similar socio-environmental contexts. This study thus provides a comprehensive framework for promoting sustainable water management that aligns environmental preservation with community livelihood needs.

Water is essential for daily community needs, fishing activities, and maintaining healthy ecosystems, but many communities face challenges such as water scarcity, pollution, and overuse. These problems threaten both the livelihoods of local fishers and the environment. The study aims to evaluate the current water management practices in these communities to identify which approaches are sustainable and which need improvement.
The research addresses a knowledge gap about why some water management strategies succeed or fail in the context of small-scale coastal fishing communities. By doing so, it provides practical insights for policymakers, community leaders, and environmental managers to develop strategies that ensure water availability and quality for future generations.
The researcher will start by reviewing existing literature on water management techniques used globally and locally in similar communities. They will then select a coastal fishing community with a population of around 500 households for detailed study. Data will be collected through a combination of surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions with fishermen, community leaders, and water resource managers to understand current practices and perceptions. Field observations and document reviews will supplement this data collection.
For data analysis, descriptive statistics will summarize the survey responses. Thematic analysis will interpret qualitative data to identify common themes and challenges. Statistical tests such as chi-square or regression analysis might be used to examine relationships between community factors and management effectiveness.
The study will contribute new knowledge about the effectiveness of different water management practices in small coastal fishing communities, highlighting best practices and gaps.
