Thesis Abstract

Urban agricultural communities are increasingly vital for enhancing food security and local livelihoods; however, their sustainability is often challenged by inefficient water management practices amid rapid urban growth and resource scarcity. This study aims to comprehensively assess the sustainability of water management practices within urban agricultural communities, identifying key factors influencing their efficacy and proposing strategies for improvement. The specific objectives include evaluating current water use and conservation methods, examining community perceptions and practices concerning water conservation, and analyzing the socio-economic, environmental, and institutional drivers shaping water management behaviors in these settings. A mixed-methods research design was employed, integrating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to capture a holistic understanding of water management practices. The study population comprised 150 urban farmers from four distinct communities within the metropolitan area, selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representativeness across socio-economic and demographic spectra. Quantitative data were collected via structured questionnaires that addressed water use patterns, conservation measures, and demographic variables, while qualitative data derived from focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with key informants such as community leaders, water officials, and extension workers. Validity and reliability of the data collection instruments were verified through pilot testing and Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient, which exceeded the 0.7 threshold. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics to summarize water use practices and perceptions, while inferential techniques, notably multiple regression analysis, were applied to identify the significant socio-economic and institutional determinants of sustainable water management. The thematic analysis approach was adopted for qualitative data to extract predominant themes regarding community attitudes, perceived barriers, and enablers of sustainable water practices. The study also employed the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Water-Energy-Food Nexus framework to underpin the analytical lens, providing a theoretical basis for understanding behavioral and systemic interactions influencing water management. Expected findings indicate that while most communities utilize conventional water sources such as municipal supplies and boreholes, there is widespread adoption of water-saving devices, albeit to varying degrees. Factors such as income levels, access to extension services, and institutional support are anticipated to significantly influence conservation practices. Additionally, barriers such as inadequate infrastructure, limited awareness, and weak policy enforcement are expected to impede sustainable management. The analysis is projected to reveal that community perceptions, coupled with socio-economic and institutional factors, jointly shape water use behaviors, highlighting areas for targeted intervention. This research will contribute to the body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the actual practices, challenges, and opportunities for enhancing water sustainability in urban agriculture. It bridges gaps in the literature regarding contextualized, community-specific assessments within urban settings, emphasizing the role of socio-institutional dynamics. The findings are expected to inform policymakers, urban planners, and community organizations on designing tailored interventions that promote water conservation and sustainable resource management in urban agricultural contexts. The study concludes that sustainable water management in urban agricultural communities hinges on integrated, community-sensitive strategies that leverage local knowledge and strengthen institutional capacity. Recommendations include implementing targeted awareness campaigns, improving water infrastructure, incentivizing conservation practices, and fostering multi-stakeholder collaborations. The research advocates for policy frameworks that accommodate local realities and promote participatory governance, thereby ensuring the resilience and sustainability of urban agriculture. Suggestions for future research include longitudinal studies to assess the long-term impacts of implemented interventions and comparative analyses across different urban regions to generalize findings and best practices.
