Thesis Abstract
The rapid proliferation of social media platforms has transformed marketing dynamics within the apparel industry, particularly influencing youth consumers' perceptions and loyalty toward fashion brands. This study investigates the impact of social media influencers on youth fashion brand loyalty, addressing the growing reliance on influencer marketing as a strategic tool amidst shifts in consumer behavior driven by digital engagement. The primary aim is to examine the extent to which social media influencers shape brand attitudes, trust, and repeat purchase intentions among youth aged 15-25 years. Specific objectives include assessing the influence of influencer credibility, attractiveness, and engagement on brand loyalty; exploring the mediating roles of perceived authenticity and emotional attachment; and identifying demographic factors that moderate these relationships. Employing a quantitative research design, the study adopted a cross-sectional survey methodology to collect data from a stratified random sample of 500 youth social media users who follow fashion influencers on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. The questionnaire was developed based on existing validated scales measuring influencer credibility, perceived authenticity, emotional connection, and brand loyalty. Data collection was conducted over a three-month period, with measures taken to ensure validity and reliability, including pilot testing and Cronbach’s alpha analysis, which yielded coefficients above 0.8 for all constructs. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using AMOS software served as the primary analytical technique to test hypothesized relationships, with additional descriptive and inferential statistics computed via SPSS. Preliminary findings are expected to demonstrate that influencer credibility and attractiveness significantly positively influence youth brand loyalty, mediated by perceptions of authenticity and emotional attachment. The study also anticipates that engagement levels (likes, comments, shares) enhance these influences, fostering stronger brand loyalty. Additionally, demographic factors such as age, gender, and prior brand awareness are hypothesized to moderate the relationships between influencer traits and loyalty outcomes. These results will contribute novel insights into the mechanisms through which social media influencers impact consumer loyalty within the fashion context, filling existing gaps in empirical research that primarily focus on product purchase intentions rather than sustained brand loyalty. Theoretically, the study extends the Source Credibility Model and the Parasocial Interaction Theory by integrating perceived authenticity and emotional attachment as pivotal mediators, thereby enriching the understanding of influencer influence processes in digital marketing. Practically, the findings provide strategic recommendations for fashion brands to optimize influencer collaborations by emphasizing credibility, fostering authenticity, and engaging emotionally with youth audiences to enhance long-term loyalty. The study also highlights the importance of consumer demographic segmentation in influencer marketing strategies. In conclusion, the research underscores the significant role social media influencers play in cultivating youth loyalty toward fashion brands, mediated through perceived authenticity and emotional engagement. It recommends that apparel companies invest in selecting credible and authentic influencers who actively engage their followers, employ authentic storytelling, and leverage emotional resonance to foster enduring consumer-brand relationships. Further research could explore longitudinal impacts and the role of cultural differences in influencer effectiveness, offering a comprehensive understanding of influencer marketing’s evolving influence on youth consumer behavior in the digital era.
Thesis Overview
This research explores how social media influencers affect young people's loyalty to fashion brands within the clothing and apparel industry. It seeks to understand whether and how influencers—individuals who promote products on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube—influence teens and young adults to choose, trust, and remain committed to specific fashion brands. This topic is important because social media has become a dominant marketing channel, and influencers often sway purchasing decisions of youth, yet little is known about how this influence translates into long-term brand loyalty.
The study addresses a gap in existing knowledge by focusing specifically on the relationship between influencer marketing and sustained loyalty, rather than just short-term purchasing behavior. It will investigate questions such as which types of influencer content most impact loyalty, and what psychological factors mediate this relationship.
The research will proceed systematically. First, the researcher will review existing literature to identify theories and prior findings relevant to influencer marketing and brand loyalty, such as the Theory of Planned Behavior and Social Influence Theory. Then, a survey will be designed and administered to a sample of approximately 400 young consumers aged 16 to 25 in urban areas, using stratified random sampling. Data collection will involve structured questionnaires measuring variables like influencer credibility, emotional engagement, brand trust, and loyalty. Validity and reliability of the questionnaire will be established through expert review and pilot testing.
For data analysis, the researcher will employ descriptive statistics to describe the sample, and inferential techniques such as regression analysis and structural equation modeling to test hypotheses about relationships among variables. The findings are expected to reveal significant links between influencer credibility, emotional connection, and brand loyalty, contributing new insight into how influencer marketing shapes consumer behavior in the fashion industry.
The study’s results will serve as evidence-based guidance for marketers and brands aiming to develop more effective influencer strategies, potentially influencing future marketing practices and academic research. The overall outcome aims to deepen understanding of digital consumer behavior and the role of social media influencers in shaping long-term brand relationships among youth.
