Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The urban heat island (UHI) effect is a phenomenon where urban areas experience significantly higher temperatures compared to their rural surroundings. This project investigates the UHI effect in a rapidly growing city, analyzing the factors contributing to its intensity and spatial distribution. The study focuses on understanding the impact of urbanization, land cover changes, and anthropogenic activities on the UHI effect in the selected city. The research methodology employed a combination of remote sensing analysis, geographic information system (GIS) techniques, and statistical modeling to quantify and map the UHI effect across the study area. Ten specific objectives were developed to guide the investigation, including assessing land surface temperature variations, identifying hotspots of UHI intensity, and evaluating the relationship between land cover types and temperature patterns. The findings from the study reveal a significant UHI effect in the rapidly growing city, with temperature differentials exceeding 5 degrees Celsius between urban and rural areas. The analysis of land cover changes indicates a direct correlation between impervious surfaces, such as buildings and roads, and higher temperatures. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of the UHI effect varies across different neighborhoods within the city, influenced by factors such as green spaces, building density, and land use patterns. The discussion of findings delves into the implications of the UHI effect on urban residents, highlighting potential health risks, energy consumption patterns, and urban planning considerations. The role of green infrastructure and sustainable urban design in mitigating the UHI effect is also explored, emphasizing the importance of incorporating nature-based solutions in city planning and development. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on urban heat island effects in rapidly growing cities, providing insights into the dynamics of temperature variations and their implications for urban sustainability. The study underscores the need for proactive measures to address the UHI effect, including urban greening initiatives, climate-resilient infrastructure, and community engagement strategies. By understanding the drivers of the UHI effect and implementing targeted interventions, cities can enhance their resilience to climate change impacts and create more livable urban environments for their residents.

Thesis Overview

The research project titled "Analysis of urban heat island effect in a rapidly growing city" aims to investigate the phenomenon of urban heat islands (UHIs) within the context of a rapidly expanding urban environment. Urban heat islands refer to areas within cities that experience significantly higher temperatures compared to their rural surroundings due to human activities and urbanization processes. As cities grow and develop, they often undergo changes in land use, increased infrastructure, and higher population density, all of which contribute to the intensification of UHIs. The study will focus on a specific rapidly growing city where the impacts of UHIs are becoming increasingly evident. By examining the spatial and temporal patterns of temperature variations within the urban area, the research aims to identify the key drivers of UHIs in the context of urban growth and development. This analysis will involve the use of remote sensing data, geographic information systems (GIS), and meteorological data to map and quantify the extent of UHIs and their relationship to urban morphology and land use patterns. Furthermore, the research will investigate the potential environmental and socio-economic implications of UHIs in the study area. High urban temperatures can lead to increased energy consumption for cooling, reduced air quality, and negative health outcomes for residents. By understanding the dynamics of UHIs and their impacts on the local environment and communities, the study seeks to provide insights that can inform urban planning and policy interventions to mitigate the effects of UHIs in the rapidly growing city. Overall, this research project aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on urban heat islands by examining their manifestation in a specific context of urban growth and development. By shedding light on the drivers and impacts of UHIs in a rapidly expanding city, the study seeks to provide valuable information for sustainable urban planning and climate adaptation strategies to create more livable and resilient urban environments.
