Thesis Abstract
Urban areas are increasingly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change, necessitating inclusive resilience strategies that incorporate diverse knowledge systems. Traditional climate resilience planning predominantly relies on scientific and technical data, often overlooking indigenous knowledge systems (IKS), which hold valuable, context-specific insights into local environmental management and adaptation practices. Despite growing recognition of the potential benefits of integrating IKS, there remains a lack of comprehensive frameworks that operationalize this integration within urban climate resilience policies and planning processes. This study aims to develop a robust, context-sensitive framework for integrating indigenous knowledge into urban climate resilience planning, thereby enhancing adaptive capacity and fostering sustainable urban development. The specific objectives are threefold firstly, to identify and document indigenous knowledge systems relevant to climate adaptation and resilience among urban communities; secondly, to critically evaluate existing integration practices within urban resilience policies through a policy analysis approach; and thirdly, to design and validate a conceptual framework that operationalizes the integration of indigenous knowledge into urban climate resilience strategies. The research adopts a mixed-methods design, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques to ensure depth, breadth, and rigor. The population includes residents of two metropolitan cities renowned for their diverse indigenous communities, with a total population sample of 500 respondents selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representation across different socio-cultural groups. Primary data collection involves semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory mapping with indigenous elders, local practitioners, and policymakers, alongside structured questionnaires administered to sampled community residents. Secondary data include policy documents, urban resilience plans, and ethnographic records, obtained from municipal archives, NGOs, and academic sources. To ensure validity and reliability, interview protocols are pre-tested, and triangulation is employed across data sources. Data analysis will involve thematic analysis for qualitative data, utilizing NVivo software, to identify recurrent themes and patterns related to indigenous knowledge domains and their perceived relevance in resilience planning. The main conclusion underscores the critical importance of institutionalizing indigenous knowledge within urban resilience frameworks to enhance adaptive capacity and community participation.
