Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The occurrence of landslides in mountainous regions poses significant threats to human lives, infrastructure, and the environment. In this study, we focused on analyzing landslide susceptibility in a mountainous region using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing techniques. The research aimed to develop a comprehensive understanding of factors influencing landslide occurrence and to create a reliable landslide susceptibility map to aid in mitigation and prevention strategies. Chapter One introduces the research by providing background information on landslides, highlighting the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance of the study, and defining key terms. Chapter Two presents a detailed literature review covering various aspects related to landslides, GIS, Remote Sensing, and landslide susceptibility mapping. The chapter synthesizes existing knowledge and identifies research gaps that this study seeks to address. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology employed in this study. It includes details on data collection methods, GIS and Remote Sensing techniques utilized, selection of landslide susceptibility factors, modeling approaches, validation methods, and software tools used for analysis. The chapter provides a systematic framework for conducting the research and generating reliable results. In Chapter Four, the findings of the research are discussed in detail. The chapter presents the results of landslide susceptibility mapping, highlighting the spatial distribution of susceptible areas and the influence of various factors on landslide occurrence. The discussion includes an analysis of the model performance, accuracy assessment, and comparison with existing landslide inventory data. Finally, Chapter Five presents the conclusion and summary of the research findings. The chapter discusses the implications of the study, recommendations for future research, and practical applications of the developed landslide susceptibility map. The study contributes to the field of geosciences by providing valuable insights into landslide susceptibility assessment in mountainous regions using advanced GIS and Remote Sensing techniques. Overall, this research enhances our understanding of landslide susceptibility in mountainous regions and provides a valuable tool for decision-makers, planners, and stakeholders to implement effective mitigation and prevention measures. The findings underscore the importance of utilizing GIS and Remote Sensing technologies for landslide risk assessment and management, ultimately contributing to the resilience of communities in mountainous areas facing landslide hazards.

Thesis Overview

The research project titled "Analysis of Landslide Susceptibility in a Mountainous Region Using GIS and Remote Sensing Techniques" aims to investigate the factors contributing to landslide occurrences in mountainous regions and to develop a model for assessing landslide susceptibility using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing technologies. Mountainous regions are particularly prone to landslides due to their steep terrain, geological composition, and climatic conditions. Understanding the susceptibility of these regions to landslides is crucial for effective disaster risk management and mitigation strategies. The research will begin with a comprehensive review of existing literature on landslides, GIS applications, and remote sensing techniques. This literature review will provide a foundation for understanding the current state of knowledge in the field and identifying gaps that the research aims to address. The methodology chapter will outline the steps involved in data collection, processing, and analysis. Remote sensing data, including satellite imagery and digital elevation models, will be utilized to map the terrain characteristics of the study area. GIS software will be employed to integrate these data layers and derive spatial relationships that influence landslide susceptibility. Statistical analyses and modeling techniques will be used to develop a predictive model for landslide susceptibility based on the identified factors. The findings chapter will present the results of the analysis, including the spatial distribution of landslide susceptibility in the study area and the factors contributing to this susceptibility. The developed model will be evaluated for its accuracy and effectiveness in predicting landslide occurrences. The discussion will interpret the findings in the context of existing literature and discuss the implications for landslide risk management and mitigation strategies in mountainous regions. In conclusion, this research project will contribute valuable insights into understanding landslide susceptibility in mountainous regions using GIS and remote sensing techniques. The findings and recommendations will have practical implications for land use planning, disaster preparedness, and sustainable development in mountainous areas prone to landslides.
