Thesis Abstract

Environmental degradation and unsustainable resource utilization pose significant challenges to community health and economic development in many localities. Despite increasing awareness of environmental issues, limited community engagement and ineffective dissemination strategies hinder behavioral change. This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate a community-based environmental awareness campaign to enhance residents’ understanding and positively influence their environmental practices. The primary objectives include identifying critical environmental issues specific to the locality, designing culturally appropriate awareness strategies, implementing the campaign within selected communities, and assessing its impact on residents’ environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative surveys and qualitative focus group discussions. The quantitative component involved a stratified random sample of 600 residents across four communities, with data collected through structured questionnaires measuring environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors before and after the intervention. The qualitative component comprised eight focus groups with community leaders, youth, and women’s groups to explore perceptions, barriers, and facilitators related to environmental engagement. The intervention phase entailed constructing informational materials, organizing community clean-up drives, and conducting interactive workshops tailored according to the Health Belief Model and Social Cognitive Theory, both of which provided the theoretical framework underpinning campaign strategies. Validity and reliability of the quantitative instruments were assessed through pilot testing and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.8, ensuring measurement consistency. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, paired sample t-tests to evaluate pre- and post-intervention changes, and regression analysis to identify predictors of behavioral change. Thematic analysis was applied to qualitative data, using NVivo software, to interpret perceptions and contextual factors influencing community participation. It is anticipated that the findings will demonstrate statistically significant improvements in participants’ environmental knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported practices following the campaign. Specifically, regression analysis is expected to reveal that factors such as community cohesion, perceived severity of environmental issues, and self-efficacy significantly predict behavioral change. The qualitative insights will provide an in-depth understanding of community perceptions, barriers to sustained engagement, and effective communication strategies, complementing quantitative outcomes. This research contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the efficacy of community-tailored environmental awareness interventions within a specific socio-cultural context. It advances understanding of how theoretical models like the Health Belief Model and Social Cognitive Theory can be operationalized in community engagement strategies. The study also offers a robust methodological framework for designing, implementing, and evaluating similar campaigns in diverse settings. The main conclusion underscores the potential of targeted, participatory campaigns informed by behavioral theories to foster meaningful environmental behavior change. Based on the findings, practical recommendations include scaling up community-led initiatives, integrating environmental education into local schools, and fostering partnerships with local authorities to sustain behavioral interventions. Additionally, the study advocates for continuous monitoring and adaptive strategies to enhance campaign effectiveness over time. Future research should explore long-term behavioral sustainability and the applicability of such models across different cultural and environmental contexts.
