Thesis Abstract

Land use changes are a critical aspect of environmental management and sustainable development. Understanding the dynamics of land use changes is essential for effective planning and decision-making. This research project aims to assess land use changes in a specific region over a period of ten years using remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) techniques. The study area is located in a rapidly developing region where urbanization, agricultural expansion, and deforestation have been identified as major drivers of land use change. The research will analyze satellite images from 2009 and 2019 to identify and map changes in land cover types such as forests, croplands, urban areas, water bodies, and barren lands. The classification of land cover will be done using supervised and unsupervised classification methods to accurately delineate different land use classes. In addition to mapping land cover changes, the project will also investigate the causes and consequences of these changes. By analyzing historical data and conducting field surveys, the research will assess the driving forces behind land use changes, such as population growth, economic activities, and policy interventions. Furthermore, the study will examine the impacts of land use changes on ecosystem services, biodiversity, and local communities. The findings of this research will provide valuable insights for land use planning and natural resource management in the study area. By quantifying and mapping land use changes, decision-makers will be better informed to develop strategies for sustainable land use practices. The results of the study can be used to formulate policies that promote conservation, sustainable agriculture, and urban planning that balance economic development with environmental protection. Overall, this research project contributes to the broader understanding of land use dynamics and their implications for environmental sustainability. By employing remote sensing and GIS technologies, the study offers a systematic approach to monitoring and analyzing land use changes at a regional scale. The results of this research will be relevant not only for the specific study area but also for informing land use policies and practices in similar regions facing similar challenges of rapid land use change.

The land use of a place tend to change due to the nature and type of activities of its inhabitants.

These changes over time have significant effect on the environment. The positive and negative indication of such changes need to be noticed before the settlement decay. In this research work, the land use change indicators are assessed and solutions are proffered to mitigate the negative effects of such changes.
