Exploring the Impact of Community Mural Art on Urban Social Cohesion

Thesis Abstract

Community mural art has increasingly been recognized as a strategic form of urban public art capable of fostering social cohesion within diverse neighborhoods. This study investigates the extent to which community mural projects influence social bonds, civic participation, and perceptions of collective identity among residents in densely populated urban districts. Addressing the gap in empirical evidence on the social impact of mural art, the research aims to evaluate the relationship between mural interventions and indicators of social cohesion, ultimately providing evidence-based insights into their social value and implications for urban development policies. The specific objectives include (1) to assess residents' perceptions of social cohesion before and after mural creation; (2) to analyze the role of mural art in enhancing community participation; (3) to explore the perceived influence of murals on social trust and collective identity; and (4) to identify the key features of mural projects that contribute most significantly to social cohesion. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews, and visual analysis. The population comprises residents and community stakeholders within three neighborhoods with active mural projects in a metropolitan city, totaling approximately 500 residents selected through stratified random sampling to ensure diversity in age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires measuring social cohesion indicators, semi-structured interview guides for community leaders and artists, and photographic documentation of murals for visual thematic analysis. Validity and reliability of surveys are ensured through pilot testing and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.80, while qualitative data are analyzed via thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s methodology. Quantitative data are subjected to paired t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis to determine relationships between mural presence and social cohesion metrics. It is anticipated that results will reveal statistically significant improvements in residents’ perceptions of trust, belonging, and civic engagement post-mural implementation. Regression models are expected to identify mural visibility, thematic relevance, and community participation as key predictors of enhanced social cohesion. Qualitative analysis is likely to uncover themes related to collective identity, cultural expression, and social inclusion, supporting the quantitative findings. The findings are expected to contribute novel empirical evidence to the discourse on urban art’s social functions, advancing the theoretical understanding of place-making and participatory urbanism through the lens of social cohesion and community development theories such as Putnam’s Social Capital Theory and the Theory of Urban Vitality. The study’s primary contribution lies in empirically substantiating the social benefits of community mural art and providing actionable insights for urban planners, policymakers, and artists aiming to foster resilient and inclusive neighborhoods. It underscores the importance of community involvement, cultural relevance, and aesthetic quality in mural projects as instrumental factors that maximize social cohesion outcomes. The research concludes that community murals serve not only as aesthetic enhancements but also as vital catalysts for social bonding and civic participation. Recommendations include integrating mural projects into broader urban renewal strategies, promoting participatory processes in mural creation, and conducting longitudinal assessments to monitor sustained social impacts. Future studies are proposed to explore the long-term behavioral changes associated with mural art and its role in conflict resolution and social justice initiatives, thereby expanding understanding of murals as multi-dimensional tools for social transformation in contemporary urban environments.
