Thesis Abstract

Community murals are central to cultural memory and urban identity, yet many traditional techniques are at risk due to erosion of local craft knowledge, urban development pressures, and limited access to skilled artisans. This study addresses the problem of knowledge decline in traditional mural practice and seeks to assess the efficacy of community-based restoration as a conduit for skill transmission, sustainability, and cultural relevance in public art. The aim is to evaluate how participatory restoration processes influence technical proficiency, intergenerational knowledge transfer, and community engagement, and to identify best practices for scaling such interventions. Specific objectives include (1) documenting traditional mural techniques and materials used in selected communities; (2) examining the roles of community actors (artists, elders, youths, local institutions) in knowledge exchange; (3) assessing changes in participants’ technical competencies and confidence in mural restoration; (4) analyzing the social and cultural impacts of restoration activities on neighborhood cohesion and place attachment; and (5) developing a replicable framework for community-based mural restoration grounded in traditional craft ethics and material choices. The study adopts an embedded mixed-methods design, integrating qualitative and quantitative strands to triangulate findings. The population comprises 120 participants across two urban neighborhoods with documented mural heritage 40 professional artisans, 40 community volunteers (including youths aged 14–25 and middle-aged residents), and 40 local stakeholders (art administrators, heritage officers, and sponsors). A purposive sample of 30 artisans and 60 volunteers will be recruited, ensuring representation across gender, age, and experience. Data collection instruments include semi-structured interviews with artisans and stakeholders, focus group discussions with volunteers, participant observation during restoration sessions, pre- and post-intervention skill assessments using standardized rubrics, and a survey instrument measuring attitudes toward heritage, perceived empowerment, and social cohesion. Materials analysis will document pigment types, binders, and surface preparation techniques. Validity and reliability will be enhanced through triangulation, member checking, inter-rater reliability for skill assessments (Cohen’s kappa), and pilot testing of the survey instrument. Key expected findings include (i) restoration participation leads to measurable improvements in practical mural skills among volunteers, with the strongest gains among youths engaged in repeated hands-on sessions; (ii) enhanced intergenerational knowledge transfer is mediated by structured mentorship and collaborative decision-making; (iii) restoration initiatives strengthen local identity, sense of belonging, and perceived legitimacy of traditional techniques within contemporary urban art discourse; (iv) material choices that align with local ecologies and traditional recipes contribute to durability and aesthetic continuity; and (v) a scalable framework emerges, comprising community mobilization protocols, skill-certification pathways, and a participatory evaluation toolkit. The study contributes to knowledge by empirically detailing how community-driven restoration sustains traditional mural techniques while fostering social capital and resilient urban culture, thereby bridging craft heritage and contemporary public art practice. It offers a replicated methodological model for other locales facing similar threats to mural heritage, integrating practical restoration, heritage studies, and social science inquiry. The primary conclusion anticipates that structured, inclusive, mentor-guided participation yields durable skill development and measurable social benefits, recommending policy support for community art labs, joint funding mechanisms with cultural heritage agencies, and the integration of traditional mural training into school and community programs to institutionalize knowledge transmission and sustainability.
