The study investigates the integration of sustainable material innovation within contemporary Fine Arts practice, addressing the persistent disjunction between artistic experimentation and environmental accountability. It posits that a coherent framework combining material lifecycle assessment, ethical sourcing, and design-for-sustainability principles can guide artists toward environmentally responsible creativity without compromising aesthetic value or technical feasibility. The aim is to develop a robust framework that operationalizes sustainable material innovation for practicing artists, curators, and educators, with specific objectives (1) to identify material decision-making processes and constraints faced by fine artists; (2) to assess the environmental impacts of commonly used conventional and alternative materials across stages of creation, exhibition, and conservation; (3) to synthesize theoretical insights from sustainable design, material culture, and artist-led innovation into a practical framework; (4) to pilot the framework in selected studios and evaluate its feasibility, acceptability, and impact on material choices; and (5) to formulate guidelines for policy, procurement, and pedagogy that embed sustainability within fine arts curricula and professional practice. A mixed-methods research design combines a convergent parallel approach with an interpretive stance. The study population comprises professional visual artists, conservators, and art educators in metropolitan art institutions. A purposive sample of 60 practitioners will be recruited, including 40 practicing artists (divided equally between contemporary painters, sculptors, and mixed-media practitioners) and 20 conservators/educators. Data collection will involve (i) semi-structured interviews with 60 participants to capture decision rationales, material sourcing, and perceived barriers; (ii) a material lifecycle assessment (LCA) on a baseline set of 12 frequently used materials (oil paint, acrylics, plaster, resin, wood, metal) and their sustainable alternatives, conducted at material input, fabrication, usage, and end-of-life stages; (iii) a survey instrument assessing attitudes toward sustainability, willingness to adopt new materials, and perceived performance trade-offs; (iv) case study observations in four artist studios implementing the framework pilots; and (v) document analysis of procurement records and exhibition dossiers. Validity and reliability will be addressed through triangulation, member checking, and pilot-testing of instruments, with thematic analysis for qualitative data and quantitative analysis using regression models to explore predictors of sustainable material adoption. Data analysis will proceed in three strands. Thematic analysis of interview and studio-observation transcripts will be conducted using NVivo, guided by codes derived from the theoretical framework, ensuring reflexive auditing and inter-coder reliability checks. Quantitative data from the survey and LCA results will be analyzed with multiple regression to identify factors significantly predicting sustainable material adoption (e.g., perceived performance, cost, accessibility, and institutional support). ANOVA will compare material performance perceptions across disciplines. The synthesis phase will integrate qualitative and quantitative findings to refine the proposed framework, culminating in a context-sensitive model of sustainable material innovation that links material science insights with artistic practice constraints and institutional ecosystems. Key expected findings include (a) a taxonomy of sustainable materials and their performance profiles relative to conventional materials across painting, sculpture, and mixed-media contexts; (b) identifiable decision heuristics and barriers shaping material choices in studio practice; (c) evidence on the environmental gains achievable through conventional-to-sustainable material substitution and design modifications; (d) validated components of a practical framework comprising material sourcing guidelines, lifecycle-informed decision matrices, and pedagogy and policy interventions; and (e) a set of scalable recommendations for art institutions to integrate sustainability into procurement, studio access policies, and curriculum design. The study contributes to knowledge by bridging material science with fine arts practice, offering an actionable, theory-informed framework grounded in sustainable design theory (Cradle-to-Cradle and Life Cycle Thinking) and material culture theory, operationalized for professional studio context. It advances ethical praxis in art making and provides a replicable methodological approach for evaluating sustainability in creative workflows. The main conclusion anticipates that a structured framework enabling lifecycle-conscious material decisions can be successfully embedded in Fine Arts practice without compromising artistic integrity or technical performance. Recommendations include the adoption of standardized procurement guidelines favoring renewable and recyclable inputs, integration of sustainability modules into MFA/MA curricula, incentives for studios to pilot green material substitutions, and ongoing professional development for conservators to support sustainable display and conservation strategies.
