Thesis Abstract
Abstract
The delicate ecosystems of coral reefs are facing unprecedented challenges due to the effects of climate change. This thesis investigates the impact of climate change on coral reefs, focusing on a Marine Protected Area in the Caribbean as a case study. The study aims to understand the specific threats posed by climate change to coral reefs in the region and assess the effectiveness of marine protected areas in mitigating these impacts. The research begins with an introduction that provides background information on coral reefs, outlines the problem statement, and sets out the objectives of the study. The study also identifies the limitations and scope of the research, highlights the significance of the study, and presents the structure of the thesis. In addition, key terms relevant to the study are defined to provide clarity and context. A comprehensive review of the literature is conducted in Chapter Two, which includes an analysis of ten key studies related to climate change impacts on coral reefs and the role of marine protected areas in coral reef conservation. This literature review serves as a foundation for the research methodology employed in the study. Chapter Three details the research methodology, outlining the research design, data collection methods, and analytical techniques used to investigate the impact of climate change on coral reefs in the Marine Protected Area. The chapter also discusses ethical considerations, data validity, and reliability to ensure the rigor of the research findings. In Chapter Four, the findings of the study are presented and discussed in detail. The analysis focuses on the specific impacts of climate change on coral reefs within the Marine Protected Area, examining changes in coral health, biodiversity, and ecosystem dynamics. The effectiveness of the Marine Protected Area in mitigating these impacts is also evaluated. Finally, Chapter Five provides a summary of the research findings and conclusions drawn from the study. The implications of the research are discussed, and recommendations for future research and conservation efforts are proposed. Overall, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the impact of climate change on coral reefs and the role of marine protected areas in coral reef conservation. Keywords Climate change, coral reefs, Marine Protected Area, Caribbean, conservation, biodiversity, ecosystem, research methodology, literature review.
