Abstract

This project examines the various environmental impacts that can result from war, conflict and peacetime military activities. Warfare and military operations often damage ecosystems and natural resources. Activities like bombing, shelling, chemical usage, and military vehicle and aircraft operations can pollute air, water, and soil. Military sites and former conflict zones may be contaminated with unexploded ordnance or toxic remnants of war. Deforestation and habitat destruction can occur. Refugee crises and post-conflict reconstruction bring additional environmental pressures. This research aims to document some of the specific environmental consequences of recent and ongoing conflicts, as well as the environmental legacies of military activities at home and abroad. Solutions and best practices for environmental protection and remediation will also be discussed.
