Thesis Abstract

Landfill leachate, the liquid that percolates through landfills, is a complex and highly polluting wastewater stream that poses significant environmental challenges. This research abstract provides a comprehensive review of the various treatment methods employed for landfill leachate, focusing on their efficiency, advantages, and limitations. Physical treatment methods such as sedimentation, filtration, and adsorption are commonly used for preliminary treatment of landfill leachate. These methods effectively remove suspended solids and some organic compounds, but they are often inadequate for complete leachate treatment due to the presence of recalcitrant compounds. Biological treatment methods, including aerobic and anaerobic processes, have been widely applied for treating landfill leachate. Aerobic processes are effective in removing biodegradable organic matter but can be limited by the leachate's high ammonia content. Anaerobic processes, on the other hand, can achieve high removal efficiencies of organic matter and nutrients but may require longer hydraulic retention times. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have gained attention for their ability to degrade recalcitrant organic compounds in landfill leachate. Methods such as ozonation, Fenton oxidation, and photocatalysis have shown promising results in enhancing the removal of refractory pollutants. However, the high operational costs and energy requirements associated with AOPs remain significant challenges for widespread implementation. Membrane processes, including reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, and ultrafiltration, have been increasingly utilized for treating landfill leachate due to their high removal efficiencies and compact footprint. These technologies effectively remove pollutants such as heavy metals, organic compounds, and pathogens, producing high-quality effluent suitable for discharge or reuse. However, membrane fouling and high capital costs are key limitations that need to be addressed to optimize their performance. Overall, a combination of treatment methods, known as integrated or hybrid systems, is often necessary to achieve comprehensive treatment of landfill leachate. By combining the strengths of different processes, these integrated systems can overcome individual limitations and provide more sustainable solutions for managing landfill leachate. Further research is needed to optimize treatment processes, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impacts associated with landfill leachate management.
