Abstract
This project examines the process of soil acidification and investigates its impacts on plant growth. Soil acidification occurs when acids accumulate in soils, lowering their pH. Certain agricultural practices, atmospheric deposition, and other human activities can increase soil acidity over time. The first chapter provides background on soil chemistry and the factors that influence soil pH. Chapter 2 details the mechanisms and rates of acidification from various causes. Chapter 3 presents the results of pH and plant growth experiments using locally collected soil samples with different pH levels. Chapter 4 analyzes the results to determine relationships between soil acidity and characteristics of plant growth like biomass, flowering, and nutrient uptake. Finally, Chapter 5 discusses the implications of soil acidification for local agriculture and ecosystems and provides recommendations on sustainable soil management practices.
