Abstract
This project examines the impact of invasive species on native plant and animal communities. A literature review was conducted to understand how invasive species are introduced and spread, and the various ecological impacts they can have including competition for resources, predation, habitat alteration, hybridization and genetic impacts. Field research was then carried out in a local forest to identify present invasive species, and observe their interactions with native flora and fauna. Results indicate that several invasive shrubs and vines are crowding out native understory plants, while an invasive insect is damaging native tree species. Further monitoring is needed to fully understand the long term impacts and develop effective management strategies.
