Thesis Abstract

The rapid expansion of small-scale coffee cooperatives has accentuated challenges related to waste management, necessitating an urgent assessment of their sustainability practices to prevent environmental degradation and enhance socio-economic benefits. This study aims to evaluate the current waste management practices employed by small-scale coffee cooperatives and identify factors influencing their adoption of sustainable waste practices, while proposing tailored strategies to improve environmental outcomes. The specific objectives include (1) to analyze the types and quantities of waste generated within coffee cooperatives; (2) to examine the awareness, attitudes, and practices of cooperative members regarding waste management; (3) to assess the institutional and infrastructural capacity of cooperatives in implementing sustainable waste management; and (4) to develop a conceptual framework for enhancing sustainability in waste practices applicable to small-scale coffee cooperatives. A mixed-methods research design was adopted, integrating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to generate comprehensive insights. The study population comprised 25 small-scale coffee cooperatives located in coffee-producing regions of the country, with a total membership of approximately 1,200 individuals. A stratified random sampling technique selected 10 cooperatives representing diverse geographic and operational contexts, from which a sample of 300 cooperative members was drawn for questionnaire administration. Additionally, 25 cooperative managers and local environmental officers were purposively interviewed to gain contextual and institutional perspectives. Data collection instruments included a structured questionnaire validated through Cronbach’s alpha (0.86), semi-structured interview guides, and observational checklists. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multiple linear regression to identify relationships between cooperative characteristics and waste management practices. Qualitative responses were subjected to thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s procedure, enabling the identification of recurring themes related to awareness, barriers, and enablers of sustainable waste management. The study further employed the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Diffusion of Innovations Theory to develop a theoretical understanding of behavioral determinants influencing waste management practices within the cooperatives. The anticipated findings reveal that while most cooperatives generate organic waste from coffee processing, significant volumes of plastic and chemical waste are often improperly disposed of, leading to environmental hazards. The study expects to find that awareness levels are moderate, but practical implementation of sustainable practices is hindered by infrastructural deficits and limited access to environmentally-friendly waste disposal facilities. Statistical analysis is projected to demonstrate positive correlations between cooperative size, educational levels of members, and the adoption of sustainable waste practices, with key determinants including management commitment and community awareness. The thematic analysis is expected to uncover underlying cultural and systemic barriers and highlight effective strategies employed by some cooperatives, such as composting programs and waste separation initiatives. This research contributes novel insights into the contextual factors influencing waste management in small-scale coffee cooperatives, filling a significant gap in the literature on sustainable practices in developing country contexts. It advances theoretical understanding by integrating behavioral theories with practical frameworks for environmental management at the community level. The development of a conceptual model linking institutional capacity, member behavior, and environmental outcomes provides a valuable reference for policymakers, cooperative managers, and development agencies seeking to scale sustainable waste practices. The study concludes that targeted capacity building, infrastructural investments, and community-based awareness campaigns are critical for enhancing sustainability. Recommendations include the formulation of cooperative-specific waste management protocols, increased government and NGO support, and the integration of waste management education into cooperative training programs. Further research is suggested to explore longitudinal impacts of implemented strategies and to assess the scalability of successful models across different agro-ecological zones. Overall, this thesis underscores the importance of contextually adapted, participatory approaches to improving waste management sustainability in small-scale coffee cooperatives, thereby contributing to environmental conservation and socio-economic resilience.
