Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The study focused on investigating the effects of contaminants on the flow and rheological properties of oil-based mud (OBM) commonly used in drilling operations. Various contaminants such as saltwater, shale, and gas were introduced into the OBM to simulate real-world drilling conditions and assess their impact on the fluid properties. The rheological properties of the contaminated OBM were analyzed using a viscometer to measure viscosity, yield point, and gel strength. The flow behavior of the contaminated OBM was also studied using a rheometer to determine the shear stress and shear rate relationship. The results indicated that contaminants significantly influenced the rheological properties of the OBM. Saltwater contamination led to an increase in viscosity and gel strength of the OBM, while shale contamination resulted in a decrease in these properties. Gas contamination showed a complex effect on the rheological behavior of the OBM, with variations observed depending on the concentration and type of gas introduced. The flow behavior of the OBM was also affected by the contaminants, with changes in shear stress and shear rate profiles observed. Overall, the study highlighted the importance of understanding the impact of contaminants on OBM performance during drilling operations. By assessing the flow and rheological properties of contaminated OBM, drilling engineers can optimize mud formulations and operational parameters to mitigate the negative effects of contaminants. This research contributes to the body of knowledge on drilling fluid management and provides insights for improving drilling efficiency and wellbore stability in challenging environments. Further research is recommended to explore the specific mechanisms through which contaminants interact with OBM components and to develop predictive models for estimating the rheological behavior of contaminated mud systems.
