Abstract


This project examines the issue of light pollution caused by excessive and inefficient outdoor lighting from urban development. It explores how light pollution impacts human health, disrupts ecosystems, and wastes energy. The paper then proposes and evaluates strategies that cities can implement to reduce light pollution through improved lighting design and regulations. Transitioning to fully shielded, targeted lighting that is no brighter than necessary can help address this growing environmental problem while saving money for municipalities and residents. With smarter outdoor lighting, cities can curb light pollution and work towards more sustainable urban development.
