Abstract
Agricultural production and food systems contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions through long-distance transportation of food and unsustainable farming practices. This project aims to explore ways to reduce "food miles" and transition to more local and sustainable agriculture models. Reducing the distance that food travels from farm to plate can cut transportation emissions. Promoting urban agriculture, community-supported agriculture programs, and farmers markets are strategies to connect consumers with local producers. Transitioning to regenerative and organic practices can build soil health and sequester carbon. This project analyzes the environmental and community benefits of localizing food systems and provides recommendations for stakeholders to support more sustainable agriculture near population centers.
