Abstract

Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes are emerging as an innovative approach for conserving natural ecosystems while providing economic incentives for landowners. This project evaluates the potential for developing a PES program focused on carbon sequestration and storage. It analyzes existing carbon credit markets and case studies of PES initiatives around the world. The feasibility of a locally-based carbon offset program is assessed, outlining the key design considerations and stakeholders that would need to be engaged. The project concludes that a well-designed PES scheme could help meet climate change mitigation targets while supporting sustainable land management practices.
