Thesis Abstract

Abstract

Extractive industries like mining, oil and gas extraction, and logging play an important economic role but can also negatively impact the environment if not properly managed. This project aims to explore approaches for balancing the social and economic benefits of extractive industries with environmental protection goals. It will analyze the environmental risks of different extractive activities and investigate regulatory frameworks and voluntary certification programs that seek to minimize impacts. Case studies of jurisdictions with leading practices in areas like reclamation, pollution control, and engagement with Indigenous communities will also be examined. The goal is to identify principles of sustainable resource management that allow extractive industries to operate responsibly over the long term.
