Thesis Abstract

Abstract
South Asia is facing a severe water crisis, with many of its rivers considered dirty and sacred at the same time. This paradox reflects the complex relationship between water pollution and cultural beliefs in the region. The contamination of these rivers is primarily due to industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and untreated sewage disposal. The Ganges, Yamuna, and other rivers hold immense religious significance for millions of people, who continue to use the polluted water for rituals and other purposes. Confronting South Asia's water crisis requires a multidimensional approach that includes addressing both the environmental and cultural aspects. Efforts to clean up the rivers must be coupled with raising awareness about the risks of using contaminated water. Government policies play a crucial role in regulating pollution and promoting sustainable water management practices. Community involvement is also essential in finding solutions to the water crisis. Local people should be engaged in cleanup efforts and encouraged to adopt eco-friendly practices. Religious leaders can play a significant role in promoting the conservation of sacred rivers and advocating for clean water initiatives. In addition to environmental and cultural factors, the water crisis in South Asia is also exacerbated by issues of poverty and unequal access to clean water. Marginalized communities are often the most affected by water pollution and scarcity. Addressing these underlying social and economic issues is essential for achieving long-term solutions to the water crisis. International cooperation and support are crucial in confronting South Asia's water crisis. Transboundary rivers like the Ganges and Brahmaputra require coordinated efforts among neighboring countries to manage water resources effectively. Regional partnerships and agreements can help address shared challenges and promote sustainable water use practices. Overall, confronting South Asia's water crisis requires a holistic approach that considers the environmental, cultural, social, and economic dimensions of the problem. By addressing the root causes of water pollution and promoting sustainable water management practices, the region can work towards ensuring clean and safe water for all its inhabitants.
