Thesis Abstract

Abstract

This project examines the development of sustainable aquaculture practices as a means to reduce overfishing of wild fish stocks. Aquaculture, or fish farming, has grown rapidly in recent decades to meet rising seafood demand. However, many traditional aquaculture methods rely on wild-caught fish for feed and can damage the environment if not properly managed. This project analyzes how transitioning aquaculture operations to integrated multi-trophic systems, plant-based feeds, and closed-containment facilities can help alleviate pressure on oceans. It also explores the role of regulations, certification programs, and technology in promoting environmentally-friendly aquaculture. The goal is to demonstrate how sustainable aquaculture can help ensure long-term food security while protecting marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
