Abstract
Green chemistry is an approach to chemistry that reduces or eliminates the use or generation of hazardous substances during the design, manufacture and application of chemical products. This project explores how adopting principles of green chemistry can help reduce the use of toxic chemicals in consumer products. Chapter 1 provides an introduction and overview of green chemistry approaches. Chapter 2 analyzes common toxic chemicals found in products like phthalates, bisphenols, heavy metals and flame retardants. Chapter 3 discusses green chemistry alternatives that can replace these chemicals. Chapter 4 presents case studies of companies that have successfully adopted green chemistry practices. Chapter 5 concludes with policy recommendations for further promoting green chemistry to create a healthier marketplace for consumers and the environment.
