Thesis Abstract
Abstract
Industrial pollution is a pressing global issue with far-reaching consequences on public health and the environment. Despite increasing awareness and regulations aimed at curbing pollution levels, the deadly politics of industrial pollution continue to thrive through deceit and denial. This research project delves into the intricate web of deceit and denial surrounding industrial pollution, exploring the various tactics employed by industries and governments to downplay or conceal the true extent of their environmental impact. Through a comprehensive review of literature, case studies, and interviews with key stakeholders, this research sheds light on the ways in which industries manipulate data, lobby policymakers, and influence public opinion to maintain their profit margins at the expense of human lives and ecosystems. The findings reveal a disturbing pattern of misinformation, cover-ups, and negligence perpetuated by powerful industrial players, exacerbating the health disparities and environmental injustices faced by marginalized communities. Furthermore, this research highlights the complicity of governments in enabling industrial pollution through inadequate regulations, weak enforcement mechanisms, and cozy relationships with corporate interests. By turning a blind eye to the detrimental effects of pollution on public health and the environment, governments contribute to the perpetuation of environmental injustices and the erosion of trust in public institutions. In addition, this research explores the role of communities and grassroots movements in challenging the deceitful practices of industrial polluters and holding them accountable for their actions. By mobilizing public support, raising awareness, and demanding transparency and accountability from industries and governments, communities affected by industrial pollution have the power to drive meaningful change and push for a transition towards cleaner, more sustainable practices. Overall, this research project aims to raise awareness about the deadly politics of industrial pollution, uncovering the tactics of deceit and denial that perpetuate environmental harm and threaten public health. By exposing the mechanisms through which industrial polluters evade responsibility and manipulate public discourse, this research seeks to empower communities, policymakers, and civil society to confront the root causes of industrial pollution and advocate for a more just and sustainable future for all.
