Thesis Abstract

The rapid growth of urban retail outlets has significantly contributed to escalating waste generation, posing environmental challenges and highlighting the urgent need for sustainable waste management practices within this sector. Despite increasing awareness, many retail organizations in urban settings continue to implement waste handling procedures that are either inefficient or environmentally detrimental, necessitating a comprehensive assessment of existing practices and their alignment with sustainability principles. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the current waste management strategies adopted by retail businesses in the metropolitan area of City X, with the specific objectives of identifying prevalent waste disposal methods, determining the level of compliance with environmental standards, and elucidating factors that influence sustainable waste management practices among retail operators. The study employs a descriptive cross-sectional research design to facilitate the collection of quantitative and qualitative data from a representative sample of retail outlets, comprising 250 outlets selected through stratified random sampling from diverse retail categories including supermarkets, clothing stores, and electronics vendors. The research is grounded within the theoretical framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Sustainable Development Theory, which collectively provide insights into the behavioral determinants and the broader sustainability context influencing waste management practices in the retail sector. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires administered to retail managers and waste disposal staff, complemented by semi-structured interview guides for key informants, ensuring triangulation of data. Validity and reliability of the instruments are established through pilot testing and expert review, attaining a Cronbach's alpha of 0.85 for the questionnaire. Data analysis encompasses descriptive statistics to characterize waste management approaches and compliance levels, inferential statistics such as multiple regression analysis to identify determinants influencing the adoption of sustainable practices, and thematic analysis of qualitative data to explore underlying motivations and barriers. The analytical framework incorporates model specification informed by the TPB constructs—attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control—and assesses their predictive power regarding sustainable waste management behaviors. Expected findings indicate that while a majority of retail outlets demonstrate basic waste disposal procedures, there is a significant gap in recycling practices, waste segregation at source, and adherence to environmental regulations. The study anticipates identifying key factors—such as management awareness, perceived cost implications, and regulatory enforcement—that significantly influence sustainable waste management practices. These findings are integral to understanding behavioral and institutional barriers within the retail sector and underscore the need for targeted interventions. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing context-specific insights into waste management practices within urban retail environments, integrating behavioral theories with sustainability frameworks to inform policy and managerial strategies. It offers a novel comprehensive assessment that combines quantitative and qualitative data, filling a notable gap in empirical research specific to the retail industry’s environmental practices in urban contexts. The main conclusion emphasizes the critical role of managerial commitment, regulatory compliance, and consumer awareness in advancing sustainable waste management. Based on the findings, the study recommends the development of tailored policies, capacity-building initiatives, and incentive schemes to promote source segregation and recycling initiatives. Furthermore, it advocates for continuous monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to enhance compliance and operational efficiency. Future research suggestions include longitudinal studies to assess the impact of implemented policies and comparative analyses across different cities or regions to benchmark best practices in sustainable retail waste management.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on how retail businesses in urban areas manage waste sustainably. Waste management in retail is important because these businesses generate large amounts of waste, including packaging, plastic, paper, and food waste, which can harm the environment if not handled properly. The study aims to evaluate current waste management practices within these retail outlets and identify ways to improve sustainability by reducing waste, increasing recycling, and adopting environmentally friendly practices. The key problem this research addresses is that there is limited detailed information on how retail stores in urban settings implement sustainable waste management strategies and what factors influence their practices. Many previous studies have focused on industrial waste or municipal waste as a whole, but retail-specific practices and challenges are less understood. This gap prevents policymakers and business owners from developing targeted solutions for the retail sector. The researcher will begin by reviewing existing literature on sustainable waste management and theoretical frameworks like the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Waste Management Hierarchy to guide analysis. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with retail managers, staff, and waste collection service providers, with a sample size of approximately 50 retail outlets selected using purposive sampling. The questionnaires will gather data on waste management methods, attitudes, resources, and barriers. Data analysis will include descriptive statistics to summarize current practices, followed by correlation and regression analysis to identify factors influencing sustainable practices. Qualitative data from interviews will be analyzed thematically to capture nuanced insights. The expected contribution of this study is a better understanding of how urban retail businesses currently manage waste sustainably and what strategies could be adopted to improve practices. It aims to inform policymakers and business owners about effective waste management solutions tailored to the retail environment. The study anticipates that improved practices will lead to increased recycling rates, reduced waste disposal costs, and greater environmental awareness among retail stakeholders. Ultimately, the research will support the development of practical recommendations for more sustainable waste management in the retail sector.
