Abstract
This study aims to assess the housing condition and socio-economic lifestyles of slum dwellers in Akure, Nigeria. Slums are a prevalent issue in many developing countries, including Nigeria, and understanding the living conditions and socio-economic status of slum dwellers is crucial for implementing effective urban development policies. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. The quantitative aspect of the study will involve a survey of a sample of slum households in Akure to gather data on housing conditions, such as overcrowding, access to basic amenities, and structural integrity. Additionally, socio-economic data will be collected, including income levels, employment status, education levels, and access to healthcare services. This data will be analyzed using statistical methods to identify trends and patterns in the housing conditions and socio-economic status of slum dwellers. The qualitative component of the research will involve in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with slum residents to gain insight into their lived experiences, challenges, and aspirations. This qualitative data will provide a richer understanding of the factors influencing housing conditions and socio-economic lifestyles in the slums of Akure. By combining quantitative and qualitative data, this study aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the housing condition and socio-economic life styles of slum dwellers in Akure. The findings of this research will have implications for urban planning and policy development in Akure and other cities facing similar challenges. By highlighting the specific needs and vulnerabilities of slum dwellers, policymakers can design targeted interventions to improve housing conditions and enhance the socio-economic well-being of slum communities. Ultimately, this study seeks to contribute to the broader goal of sustainable urban development and poverty alleviation in Nigeria.
