Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Air pollution is a critical environmental issue that has far-reaching implications for human health and the ecosystem. Industrial activities, such as those in refineries, are significant sources of air pollution, emitting various pollutants into the atmosphere. The Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State is one such industrial facility that has been identified as a major contributor to air pollution in the region. This research project focuses on air pollution control within the Port Harcourt Refinery, aiming to assess the current state of air quality, identify key pollutants, and evaluate existing control measures. A case study approach is employed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the specific challenges and opportunities for air pollution control within the refinery. The methodology includes conducting air quality monitoring using state-of-the-art equipment to measure pollutant concentrations at different locations within the refinery premises. Additionally, detailed emissions inventories are compiled to determine the sources and quantities of pollutants released into the air. These data are analyzed to assess compliance with regulatory standards and identify areas for improvement. Various air pollution control technologies and strategies are reviewed to determine their applicability and effectiveness in the refinery setting. These may include the installation of emission control devices, process optimization, and the implementation of best practices for pollution prevention. Cost-benefit analyses are conducted to evaluate the economic feasibility of implementing these control measures. Furthermore, stakeholder engagement is emphasized to ensure that all relevant parties, including refinery management, regulatory agencies, and the local community, are involved in the decision-making process. Collaboration and communication among these stakeholders are essential for developing effective air pollution control policies and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. The findings of this research provide valuable insights into the current status of air pollution control at the Port Harcourt Refinery and offer recommendations for improvement. By implementing comprehensive air pollution control measures, the refinery can reduce its environmental impact, protect public health, and contribute to sustainable development in the region. This research contributes to the broader goal of mitigating air pollution from industrial sources and promoting a cleaner and healthier environment for all.
