This study investigates how corporate startup partnerships influence the performance, innovation capability, and sustainability of local technology SMEs within São Paulo’s vibrant innovation ecosystem, addressing a gap in empirical evidence on the mechanisms and outcomes of corporate–startup collaborations in emerging economies. The aim is to articulate how such partnerships contribute to SME growth, knowledge transfer, access to resources, and market legitimacy, while identifying conditions that enhance or inhibit value co-creation. Specific objectives include (1) evaluating the impact of partnership intensity (commitment, joint development projects, and resource sharing) on SME revenue growth and product process innovations; (2) examining the role of co-innovation capabilities and absorptive capacity as mediators; (3) assessing the influence of ecosystem factors (mentoring networks, venture capital access, and policy incentives) on partnership effectiveness; (4) comparing outcomes across technology subsectors (software, hardware, and AI-enabled services) to detect differential effects; and (5) deriving practical guidelines for managers and policy-makers to optimize corporate–startup engagements. A mixed-methods research design is employed. The population comprises 1,240 tech SMEs operating in São Paulo’s innovation districts, with a target sample of 360 firms for quantitative analysis and 40 in-depth case interviews chosen via stratified random sampling to ensure subsector representation. Data collection combines a structured survey instrument and semi-structured interviews, complemented by archival data from corporate accelerator reports, government innovation programs, and São Paulo’s tech incubator databases. The survey instrument includes validated scales for partnership quality, absorptive capacity, firm performance, and innovation output, adapted to the local context. The study utilises regression analysis to test direct and moderated effects of partnership characteristics on SME performance, hierarchical linear modeling to account for nested ecosystem factors, and structural equation modeling to assess mediation by absorptive capacity and co-innovation capability. The qualitative component employs thematic analysis to extract patterns of value creation, governance arrangements, and contextual enablers or barriers, with inter-coder reliability checked (Cohen’s kappa ? 0.80). Data triangulation across sources strengthens construct validity, while robustness checks include excluding high-leverage cases and testing alternative model specifications. Key expected findings include (i) a positive association between partnership intensity and SME revenue growth and product/process innovation, with diminishing returns beyond a threshold of collaboration; (ii) absorptive capacity and co-innovation capability mediating the partnership–performance link, underscoring the importance of prior knowledge bases and joint experimentation capabilities; (iii) ecosystem conditions, including access to venture funding, mentorship density, and policy incentives, strengthening the effectiveness of corporate–startup partnerships; (iv) sectoral heterogeneity, with software and AI-enabled services showing stronger performance gains compared with hardware due to lower capital intensity and faster iteration cycles; and (v) governance mechanisms (clear IP arrangements, milestone-based funding, and co-owned pilot infrastructure) positively moderating outcomes. The study contributes to knowledge by providing rigorous, context-specific evidence from a leading Latin American metropolis on how corporate–startup collaborations translate into measurable SME performance and innovation outcomes, enriching theories of open innovation, absorptive capacity, and ecosystem-enabled entrepreneurship. It extends the applicability of the relational view of strategy to corporate–startup engagements, and integrates ecosystem theory with firm-level dynamics in an emerging economy setting. Policy implications include actionable guidance for municipal agencies and corporate partners to design scalable accelerator programs, enable shared piloting facilities, and align incentives to sustain SME growth. Practical recommendations target senior managers of collaborating firms, venture capitalists, and policymakers, emphasizing governance clarity, capability development, and targeted support for high-pidelity co-innovation projects. The study closes with a call for longitudinal tracking to capture long-term spillover effects on São Paulo’s regional competitiveness and knowledge economy.
