Thesis Abstract

The study examines how leading technology corporations craft and utilize their mission statements to represent organizational identity, exploring the extent to which these statements align with and project their strategic objectives, cultural values, and societal roles. In an era marked by rapid technological innovation and competitive global markets, corporate mission statements serve as vital communication tools that influence stakeholder perceptions and organizational reputation. However, there exists a gap in comprehensive understanding of how tech industry leaders articulate their identities through these statements, and how such representations reflect broader industry trends, corporate culture, and stakeholder expectations. The primary aim of this research is to analyze the language, themes, and structural features of mission statements from a purposive sample of 20 leading tech firms listed on the Global Technology Index. The study seeks to identify common patterns as well as distinctive features in the representation of corporate identity, and to assess the relationship between these representations and organizational strategies. Specific objectives include (1) conducting a thematic analysis of mission statement content; (2) evaluating the alignment between stated organizational values and communicated identity; (3) examining the influence of organizational size and market position on mission statement content; and (4) applying theoretical frameworks such as Siggelkow’s Identity-Based View and Corporate Identity Theory to interpret findings. The methodology adopts a qualitative case study design complemented by quantitative content analysis. Data collection involves collecting the latest publicly available mission statements from corporate websites and official reports, with a sample size of twenty organizations. Instruments include a coding schema developed from literature review, and NVivo software for thematic coding, alongside SPSS for statistical analysis. Thematic analysis facilitates identification of recurring language patterns and themes, whereas regression analysis explores the relationship between organizational characteristics and mission statement content attributes. Validity and reliability are ensured through inter-coder agreement and triangulation with secondary sources. It is anticipated that findings will reveal prevalent themes such as innovation, societal impact, and ethical responsibility, with variations corresponding to firm size and market segment. The study expects to establish that larger firms tend to emphasize societal contribution and technological leadership, whereas smaller firms highlight agility and niche expertise. The research expects to confirm that mission statement language reflects underlying corporate identities influenced by organizational values and strategic positioning, consistent with the premises of the identified theories. Results will contribute novel insights into the role of language and content in shaping perceived corporate identity within the tech industry context. By providing a systematic analysis of how tech industry leaders represent their identities through mission statements, the study offers significant contributions to scholars interested in corporate communication, strategic management, and organizational identity. It advances understanding of the relationship between corporate narrative and identity management, adding empirical evidence to the theoretical discourse. The findings will inform corporate communicators and strategists aiming to craft authentic and effective mission statements aligned with organizational identities and stakeholder expectations. The study concludes that mission statements serve not only as reflection of corporate values but also as strategic tools for identity construction and reputation management. Recommendations include developing guidelines for more authentic and coherent mission statements, tailored to organizational size and market positioning. Future research directions proposed include longitudinal studies to observe changes over time and cross-industry comparisons to contextualize findings within broader corporate communication practices.

Thesis Overview

This research explores how technology companies craft and use their mission statements to express their identity as organizations. A mission statement is a short statement that explains a company's purpose, values, and goals, serving as a guide for employees and a message to customers and stakeholders. Since the tech industry is rapidly evolving and highly competitive, understanding how these companies communicate their identity through their mission statements can reveal insights into their brand positioning, strategic priorities, and corporate culture. The study matters because mission statements often influence consumer perception, employee motivation, and investor confidence. However, there is limited detailed analysis of how prominent tech firms articulate their identity within these statements and how these representations change over time or differ between organizations. This research addresses this gap by systematically examining the language, themes, and values expressed in mission statements of leading tech industry players. The researcher will begin by selecting a sample of ten major tech companies, such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. Data collection will involve gathering their publicly available mission statements from official websites, annual reports, and press releases. The analysis will employ qualitative methods, particularly thematic analysis, to identify common themes and patterns in how these companies portray their identity. Additionally, content analysis techniques, such as coding the mission statements for specific keywords related to innovation, customer focus, or social responsibility, will be used to find quantifiable trends. The study aims to contribute to both academic knowledge and practical understanding by revealing how corporate identity is constructed linguistically in mission statements and how this reflects broader organizational strategies. It is expected that the research will show significant variation in how tech companies emphasize innovation, social values, and customer orientation. Ultimately, the findings could help future organizational branding and communication strategies. The study expects to conclude that mission statements serve as powerful tools for showcasing company identity and shaping stakeholder perceptions.
