Thesis Abstract
The persistent lack of access to affordable and reliable financial services remains a significant barrier to socio-economic development in many developing economies, with traditional microfinance systems often constrained by high operational costs, limited reach, and issues of transparency and security. This study seeks to evaluate the potential of blockchain-based microfinance platforms to enhance financial inclusion by providing secure, transparent, and cost-effective financial services to unbanked and underbanked populations. The primary aim is to assess the impact of blockchain technology on microfinance service delivery and user adoption, with specific objectives including identifying key factors influencing adoption, evaluating the operational efficiency of blockchain platforms, and determining the extent to which these platforms contribute to financial inclusion metrics. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative data collected through structured questionnaires from a sample of 400 microfinance clients and 60 microfinance institution managers across urban and rural areas of Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana, alongside qualitative insights obtained from focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with 25 stakeholders, including platform developers and financial regulators. The questionnaires are designed to measure variables such as platform usability, trust, perceived security, transaction costs, and financial inclusion indicators. Stratified random sampling is employed to ensure representativeness across different demographic and geographic groups, while purposive sampling is used for qualitative data. Data analysis involves the application of descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine relationships among key variables and assess the influence of blockchain adoption on financial inclusion outcomes. Thematic analysis is used to interpret qualitative data, providing contextual insights into user experiences, perceived benefits, and challenges associated with the platforms. The theoretical underpinning of the research draws upon the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to explore user acceptance factors and the Financial Inclusion Framework to evaluate the extent to which blockchain microfinance platforms bridge gaps in access and usage of financial services. Preliminary expectations suggest that blockchain platforms significantly improve transaction transparency, reduce operational costs, and enhance security perceptions, thereby positively influencing user trust and adoption rates. It is anticipated that increased adoption correlates with higher levels of financial inclusion, evidenced by greater access to credit, savings, and remittance services among previously excluded populations. The study also expects to identify critical barriers such as digital literacy, infrastructural deficits, and regulatory uncertainties that hinder widespread adoption. This research makes a notable contribution to the current knowledge base by elucidating the specific pathways through which blockchain technology can drive financial inclusion in resource-constrained settings and by empirically validating the application of TAM within the context of microfinance in developing economies. It advances understanding of how technological innovations intersect with socio-economic factors to shape financial behaviors and access. The main conclusion underscores the transformative potential of blockchain microfinance platforms when coupled with supportive regulatory environments and capacity-building initiatives. Recommendations include fostering policy frameworks that promote interoperability and security standards, investing in digital literacy programs, and encouraging collaborative efforts among stakeholders to scale successful blockchain interventions.
