Thesis Abstract
Abstract
Primary education in Nigeria faces a myriad of challenges despite having promising prospects for improvement. This study aims to examine the current state of primary education in Nigeria by identifying the key challenges and exploring potential prospects for enhancing the quality and accessibility of primary education in the country. The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, including interviews, surveys, and document analysis to gather data from various stakeholders in the education sector. The challenges facing primary education in Nigeria include inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, insufficient qualified teachers, overcrowded classrooms, and a lack of access to educational materials. These challenges have resulted in low enrollment rates, high dropout rates, and poor learning outcomes among primary school students. Additionally, issues such as teacher absenteeism, outdated curriculum, and inadequate monitoring and evaluation mechanisms further compound the challenges faced by primary education in Nigeria. Despite these challenges, there are several prospects for improving primary education in Nigeria. These prospects include increasing government funding for education, investing in teacher training and professional development, improving infrastructure and classroom facilities, updating the curriculum to meet current educational needs, and enhancing monitoring and evaluation systems to ensure accountability and quality assurance. Furthermore, leveraging technology and innovative teaching methods can help enhance the quality of education and make learning more engaging and effective for primary school students. By addressing these challenges and capitalizing on the prospects for improvement, primary education in Nigeria can be transformed to provide quality education for all children, regardless of their socio-economic background or geographical location. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and other stakeholders in the education sector to develop targeted interventions and strategies to address the challenges and harness the prospects for enhancing primary education in Nigeria. Ultimately, by investing in primary education and prioritizing the needs of primary school students, Nigeria can build a strong foundation for sustainable development and ensure a brighter future for its youth.
