Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Gifted and talented children possess exceptional abilities and potential that require specific educational approaches to nurture and develop. This research project focuses on exploring the possibilities of developing the potential of gifted and talented children in Nigeria, particularly in selected primary schools in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The study aims to identify the existing challenges in recognizing and supporting gifted students, as well as proposing effective strategies to enhance their development. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. The participants will include teachers, parents, school administrators, and the gifted students themselves. The quantitative surveys will provide statistical data on the current state of gifted education in the selected primary schools, while the qualitative interviews will offer in-depth insights into the perceptions and experiences of stakeholders regarding gifted education. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on gifted education in Nigeria and provide valuable information on the challenges and opportunities for developing the potential of gifted and talented children in primary schools. By identifying the gaps in the current educational system, the research aims to offer recommendations for policy improvements and practical strategies that can be implemented at the school level to support gifted students effectively. The research will also explore the socio-cultural factors that may influence the recognition and development of giftedness in children, particularly in the context of Kaduna South Local Government Area. By understanding the unique challenges faced by gifted students in this region, the study seeks to propose culturally responsive approaches to gifted education that can address the specific needs of these children. Ultimately, this research project aims to raise awareness about the importance of catering to the needs of gifted and talented children in Nigeria and to advocate for the implementation of inclusive educational practices that support the development of all students, regardless of their abilities. By highlighting the possibilities for nurturing giftedness in primary schools and suggesting concrete steps for improvement, this study aims to contribute to the enhancement of educational opportunities for gifted children in Kaduna South Local Government Area and beyond.

Thesis Overview

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Gifted and talented children are the hinges and future hopes of any human society. They are like precious metals, which need to be hold tenaciously and nurture carefully starting with parents at home at home to teachers in variant classrooms. In the Nigerian context, innumerable gifted and talented children have faded away unnoticed, several are still diminishing each day like a flower, and many more are yet to be spotted out and developed. To this effect, parents and teachers are indispensible in the discovering and developing many hidden gifts and talents of children. This research is a snapshot and attempt to reflect on how parents and teachers can help in the discovering and developing of gifts and talents in so many Nigerian children.

In the perspective of the Nigeria’s philosophy of education, “every child has a right equal educational opportunities irrespective of any real or imagined disabilities each according to his or her ability.” One of the roles of education is to help every child, notwithstanding his or her gender, background culture, religion, ability, etc., to develop his/her potential to its fullest. Hence, education in Nigeria should endeavor to engage children fully in the learning process and provide varieties of experiences and opportunities for them to thrive. Therefore, every Nigerian child needs all round education in order to develop holistically especially the development of the innate gift (s) each possesses and the acquisition of novel talents. For this reason, all children deserve the opportunities to learn, grow, unfold, and be challenged to strive for academic excellence at all levels of education, in order to become good citizens who are capable of taking right and good decision, able to manage themselves and others.

Within the four walls of schools, there exist varieties of exceptionalities among children such as “Giftedness,” “Telentedness,” Mentally challenged, Emotional and Behavioural Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and so on. However, children whether mentally challenged or with exceptional gift and talents and learning potential require specific knowledge and attention from their parents, teachers, school authority and government, both state and federal. Giving them appropriate attention, careful nurturing of their gifts, ambitions, suitable education, and support are of paramount importance because gifted and talented children have the potential to make a unique and terrific contribution to their various communities and to the society at large. But if they are ignored, they will use their gift and talents in a wrong way or become delinquent youths and the communities and society in which they live will lose their noble services. Therefore, one should be in accord with the Davis assertion that the consequence for neglecting the children with extraordinary gifts and talents include loss of academic growth, loss of creative potential, and sometimes loss of enthusiasm for educational success, and professional achievements, thereby loosing significant contributions each would have made to the society.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Gifted students by their very advance cognitive abilities and intensity of feelings deal with issues about self and others in ways that are different from those of the general population and therefore require specialized understanding. Gifted and talented children are particular vulnerable to social and emotional settings that are not conducive to intellectual, social and emotional development problems may occur.

Teachers play a significant role in ensuring gifted and talented children receive appropriate education. It is therefore imperative that teachers be sensitive to the social and emotional development can be affected by teacher attitudes and expectations. Although there may be awareness and recognition of the social and emotional needs of gifted and talented children by teachers, there is often lack of understanding and ability to appropriately cater for these needs.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to look at the possibilities of developing the potential gifted and talented child in Nigeria and the way forward in some selected Primary schools in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State). The purpose of this research includes:

1. To identify the ways of assessing gifted and talented children.

2. To identify challenges facing gifted children

3. To indentify the roles of Parents/ Teachers in the development of gifted and talented Children.

1.4 Research Questions

The research questions include the following:

1. What are the ways of assessing gifted and talented Children?

2. What are the challenges facing gifted children?

3. What are the roles of Parent/Teachers in the development of gifted and talented Children?

1.5 Scope of the Study

This research is based on the developing the potential of a gifted and a talented child in Nigeria. (A case study of some selected Primary schools in kadana South Local Government Area of Kaduna State). The research work covers some of the problems being encountered by the gifted and talented children within the study area. The scope of the study is delimited to all primary school teachers and gifted and talented children in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

1.6 Limitations of the Study

Despite the limitations faced by the researchers, the researchers will take much care on the negative effect that will constitute of the research during the analysis of the collected data.

The problems of financial constraints and lack of time were faced by the researchers.

1.7 Definition of Terms

Giftedness: is an inner exceptional ability, and strengths can be developed.

Talented: Is a skill that can be developed

Primary School: Education meant young people between the ages of 8 and 11 years.

Performance: Task or duty carried out in an expected manner.

Education: – A process of teaching, training and learning, especially in schools, to improve knowledge and develop skills.

Learning: – Possession of knowledge got by study or gradually change of an attitude about certain things.

Teaching: – Giving instruction or lesson in subject or to make a group feel in a different way.
