Thesis Abstract

This study investigates the impact of financial literacy programs on the economic decision-making practices of small business owners within the manufacturing sector in the metropolitan region. Recognizing the critical role of financial competence in enhancing entrepreneurial success and sustainability, the research addresses the persistent gap in empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of targeted financial literacy interventions among small business stakeholders. The primary aim is to assess whether participation in structured financial literacy programs significantly improves business owners’ financial management, investment decisions, and overall economic behavior. The specific objectives include evaluating pre- and post-intervention financial knowledge levels, analyzing changes in economic decision-making patterns, and identifying the mediating role of financial confidence and attitudes towards risk. A mixed-methods research design was adopted to incorporate both quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative component employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design involving 200 small business owners, with 100 participants enrolled in a six-month financial literacy training program and 100 serving as a control group. The sample was selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representativeness across business sizes, years of operation, and geographic distribution. Data collection instruments comprised a standardized financial literacy assessment tool, structured questionnaires on entrepreneurial financial behaviors, and follow-up interviews to probe behavioral changes and perceptions. The validity and reliability of the instruments were established through pilot testing, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, and expert validation. Quantitative data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis, paired sample t-tests, and ANOVA to measure differences between pre- and post-intervention scores, as well as to assess the influence of financial literacy on decision-making variables. The qualitative data obtained from interviews were subjected to thematic analysis to contextualize and deepen understanding of behavioral shifts and perceived barriers. The study draws upon the Theory of Planned Behavior and Financial Self-Efficacy Theory to elucidate psychological mechanisms through which financial literacy influences decision-making processes. Expected findings indicate that participants exposed to the financial literacy program will demonstrate statistically significant improvements in financial knowledge and exhibit more prudent economic decisions, such as increased savings, better credit management, and informed investment choices, compared to the control group. Moreover, the research anticipates identifying positive correlations between financial confidence and risk-taking behaviors, thereby contributing to the understanding of behavioral factors mediating financial decision-making among small business owners. This research intends to fill existing knowledge gaps by providing robust empirical evidence on the causal relationship between financial literacy enhancement and effective economic decision-making in the context of small-scale enterprises. It will also contribute to the development of targeted policy recommendations emphasizing the integration of comprehensive financial education within small business support frameworks. The findings are expected to inform policymakers, financial educators, and development agencies on the design and implementation of more effective financial literacy initiatives tailored to small business needs. The study concludes that well-structured financial literacy programs serve as vital catalysts in improving economic decision-making and fostering entrepreneurial resilience. Based on the findings, recommendations will be advanced for expanding financial literacy outreach, embedding financial education in business development services, and conducting longitudinal evaluations to sustain and optimize program impacts. Suggestions for future research include exploring the long-term influence of financial literacy on business growth metrics and extending similar assessments across different sectors and geographic regions. This comprehensive investigation aims to advance understanding of the behavioral pathways through which financial literacy shapes economic outcomes among small business owners, ultimately supporting their sustainable development and fiscal responsibility.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on understanding how financial literacy programs influence the way small business owners make economic decisions. Financial literacy involves knowledge and skills that help individuals manage their money effectively, such as budgeting, saving, investing, and understanding credit. Small business owners often face complex financial decisions that impact their business success, but many lack sufficient financial knowledge. This study aims to explore whether participating in structured financial literacy programs can improve their decision-making abilities. The importance of this research lies in addressing a common problem: many small business owners struggle with managing their finances, which can lead to poor business outcomes or failures. Despite the existence of financial literacy initiatives, little is known about their actual impact on small business owners' decision processes in real-world settings. The research will fill this gap by providing evidence on whether these programs are effective and how they influence specific financial choices made by owners. The researcher will start by reviewing existing literature on financial literacy, decision-making theories, and previous studies related to small business finance. Then, a quantitative research design will be adopted. The population will include small business owners from a specific region, with a sample of about 200 participants selected using random sampling. Data will be collected through questionnaires measuring financial knowledge, decision-making confidence, and specific financial behaviors before and after participating in the programs. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics to summarize the data, paired t-tests to compare pre- and post-program responses, and regression analysis to examine the relationship between financial literacy levels and decision-making quality. The study aims to identify whether increased financial knowledge leads to better financial decisions. The contribution of this research is to provide practical evidence for policymakers and educators on the effectiveness of financial literacy programs in empowering small business owners. The expected outcome is that participants will demonstrate improved financial understanding and more informed decision-making, which can lead to greater business sustainability and growth. The study will recommend ways to enhance program design based on the findings and suggest areas for further research.
