Abstract
Childhood vaccinations are crucial in preventing infectious diseases and ensuring the health and well-being of children. However, parental knowledge and practices regarding vaccinations can significantly impact vaccination rates and coverage. This study aimed to assess parental knowledge and practices concerning childhood vaccinations in a rural community, focusing on understanding the factors influencing vaccination decisions and identifying potential areas for intervention. The research methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data on parental attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors related to childhood vaccinations. A total of 300 parents from a rural community were surveyed, and 30 parents participated in in-depth interviews to provide rich insights into their vaccination experiences and decision-making processes. The findings revealed varying levels of knowledge and understanding among parents regarding childhood vaccinations. While the majority of parents recognized the importance of vaccinations in preventing diseases, there were gaps in knowledge about specific vaccines, schedules, and potential side effects. Several factors influenced parental vaccination decisions, including access to healthcare services, socio-economic status, cultural beliefs, and trust in healthcare providers. Importantly, the study identified misconceptions and concerns surrounding vaccinations, such as safety and efficacy, which contributed to vaccine hesitancy and refusal among some parents. These findings underscore the need for targeted educational interventions and communication strategies to address misinformation and improve parental acceptance of vaccinations. The study also highlighted the role of healthcare providers and community health workers in promoting vaccination uptake and addressing parental concerns. Building trust, providing accurate information, and engaging with parents in meaningful discussions were identified as key strategies to enhance vaccination communication and advocacy in the rural community. In conclusion, this thesis provides valuable insights into parental knowledge and practices regarding childhood vaccinations in a rural community. By understanding the factors influencing vaccination decisions and addressing the barriers to vaccine acceptance, public health authorities can develop tailored interventions to improve vaccination coverage and protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on vaccination behavior and provides practical recommendations for promoting immunization in rural communities.
