Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Senna alata, commonly known as candle bush, is a plant traditionally used in various medicinal practices for its potential health benefits. This study aimed to screen the biochemical composition and hypoglycemic activity of Senna alata leaves. The leaves were collected, dried, and subjected to extraction to obtain the crude extract. Biochemical analysis revealed the presence of various phytochemicals including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. The high content of these compounds suggests the potential medicinal value of Senna alata leaves. Moreover, the hypoglycemic activity of the leaf extract was evaluated through in vivo experiments using diabetic animal models. The results showed a significant reduction in blood glucose levels in the treated group compared to the control group. This indicates the potential of Senna alata leaves in managing blood sugar levels and highlights its potential as a natural hypoglycemic agent. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the biochemical composition and hypoglycemic activity of Senna alata leaves. The presence of various bioactive compounds and the demonstrated hypoglycemic effects suggest that further research on this plant species is warranted. Senna alata could potentially be developed into a natural remedy for managing diabetes and other related conditions. Further studies focusing on the isolation and characterization of active compounds from Senna alata leaves are recommended to elucidate the mechanisms underlying its hypoglycemic activity.
