Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The rapid advancement of technology in dentistry has led to the exploration of novel treatment modalities for managing periodontal diseases. This study delves into the assessment of the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in treating periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a prevalent oral health condition characterized by inflammation of the supporting structures of the teeth, leading to tissue destruction and tooth loss if left untreated. PDT, a minimally invasive treatment approach, involves the use of a photosensitizing agent activated by light of a specific wavelength to target and eliminate periodontal pathogens. The purpose of this research is to critically evaluate the effectiveness of PDT in managing periodontal disease compared to conventional treatment modalities. The study aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the clinical outcomes, microbiological changes, and patient-reported outcomes associated with PDT in periodontal therapy. A comprehensive literature review will be conducted to analyze the current understanding of PDT in dentistry, particularly its mechanism of action, indications, and clinical applications in periodontal treatment. The research methodology will involve a prospective clinical study design, with a sample population of patients diagnosed with periodontal disease. The participants will be randomly allocated to receive either PDT or conventional periodontal therapy, and their clinical parameters, microbiological profiles, and patient-reported outcomes will be assessed at specified follow-up intervals. The data will be analyzed using statistical methods to determine the efficacy and potential benefits of PDT in treating periodontal disease. The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable insights into the role of PDT as an adjunctive or alternative treatment modality in periodontal therapy. The discussion will focus on the clinical implications of the results, potential limitations of the study, and recommendations for future research in this field. The significance of this research lies in its potential to enhance the treatment outcomes and quality of life of patients with periodontal disease by introducing a non-invasive and effective therapeutic option. In conclusion, this thesis aims to shed light on the efficacy of PDT in treating periodontal disease and its implications for clinical practice. By addressing the research objectives outlined in this study, it is anticipated that the findings will contribute to the advancement of periodontal therapy and improve the management of this prevalent oral health condition.
