Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Oral mucositis is a common and debilitating side effect experienced by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Despite various treatment modalities available, the management of oral mucositis remains a challenge, often leading to significant morbidity and compromising the quality of life for these patients. Laser therapy has emerged as a promising intervention for the management of oral mucositis due to its ability to promote wound healing, reduce pain, and inflammation. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of laser therapy in the management of oral mucositis in cancer patients through a randomized controlled trial. The research design involved a randomized controlled trial with a sample size of 100 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy and experiencing oral mucositis. Participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention group receiving laser therapy or the control group receiving standard care. The primary outcome measures included the assessment of mucositis severity, pain levels, oral function, and quality of life at baseline, during treatment, and at follow-up visits. Secondary outcomes included the evaluation of treatment-related side effects and patient satisfaction with the intervention. The findings of the study revealed that laser therapy significantly reduced the severity of oral mucositis, pain levels, and inflammation compared to standard care. Patients in the laser therapy group also demonstrated improved oral function and quality of life throughout the treatment period. Additionally, the incidence of treatment-related side effects was minimal, and patient satisfaction with laser therapy was high. In conclusion, this study provides empirical evidence supporting the efficacy of laser therapy in the management of oral mucositis in cancer patients. Laser therapy emerged as a safe, effective, and well-tolerated intervention that can alleviate mucositis symptoms, improve oral health outcomes, and enhance the quality of life for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Further research is warranted to explore the long-term benefits and optimal protocols for integrating laser therapy into routine clinical practice for the management of oral mucositis in cancer patients.
