Abstract
The quest for whiter and brighter smiles has led to an increasing demand for teeth whitening procedures. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of different whitening agents on dental enamel. The research involved a comprehensive literature review to understand the various whitening agents currently available and their mechanisms of action. A total of 100 participants were recruited for the study, and their teeth were randomly assigned to different whitening agents, including hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide, and charcoal-based products. The methodology included the measurement of baseline tooth shade using a spectrophotometer, application of the whitening agents as per manufacturer instructions, and subsequent shade measurements at regular intervals over a period of four weeks. In addition, enamel microhardness and surface roughness were evaluated before and after the whitening treatments to assess any potential adverse effects on dental enamel. The findings revealed varying degrees of efficacy among the different whitening agents, with hydrogen peroxide demonstrating the most significant improvement in tooth shade. However, this was accompanied by a slight reduction in enamel microhardness, which was not observed with carbamide peroxide or charcoal-based products. Surface roughness analysis showed minimal changes after treatment, indicating the overall safety of the whitening agents on enamel. The study highlighted the importance of considering both the efficacy and safety profiles of whitening agents when determining the most suitable option for patients. The results contribute to the existing body of knowledge on teeth whitening procedures and provide valuable insights for dental practitioners in recommending appropriate whitening agents based on individual patient needs and preferences.
