The use of body-worn cameras (BWCs) by police officers has become increasingly prevalent in recent years as a tool to enhance transparency and accountability in law enforcement practices. This study aims to investigate the impact of body-worn cameras on police use of force incidents from a criminological perspective. The research will explore how the implementation of BWCs influences the behavior of both police officers and members of the public during interactions that have the potential to escalate into the use of force. The study will begin with an examination of the theoretical background surrounding the use of BWCs in policing, including the principles of deterrence theory and the social psychology of surveillance. This will be followed by a review of existing literature on the topic, analyzing previous studies that have explored the effects of BWCs on police behavior, public perceptions, and the outcomes of use of force incidents. Methodologically, this research will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of use of force data before and after the implementation of BWCs with qualitative interviews with police officers and community members. The quantitative analysis will focus on trends and patterns in use of force incidents, while the qualitative interviews will provide insights into the subjective experiences and perceptions of those involved in such incidents. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of the impact of BWCs on police use of force incidents and shed light on the mechanisms through which these devices influence behavior and outcomes in law enforcement encounters.
