Abstract
The use of body-worn cameras (BWCs) by law enforcement officers has become a prevalent practice in many police departments worldwide. These devices are intended to enhance transparency, accountability, and trust between police officers and the communities they serve. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the impact of body-worn cameras on police accountability and public trust in law enforcement. The research methodology employed in this study includes a comprehensive literature review, quantitative analysis of data collected from police departments that have implemented body-worn camera programs, and qualitative interviews with both law enforcement officers and community members. The study is guided by the theoretical frameworks of procedural justice theory and social exchange theory to understand how the use of body-worn cameras influences perceptions of fairness, trust, and cooperation between police officers and the public. The findings of this study reveal that the implementation of body-worn cameras has a significant impact on police accountability and public trust. Police officers who wear body-worn cameras are more likely to adhere to professional standards of conduct, knowing that their actions are being recorded. Moreover, the presence of body-worn cameras has been shown to improve civilian behavior during interactions with law enforcement, leading to a reduction in complaints and the use of force incidents. However, the study also identifies some limitations and challenges associated with the use of body-worn cameras, including concerns about privacy, data management, and the potential for camera footage to be misinterpreted or misused. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of clear policies and guidelines regarding the use of body-worn cameras to ensure their effectiveness in enhancing police accountability and public trust. In conclusion, this research underscores the positive impact of body-worn cameras on police accountability and public trust in law enforcement. By providing an objective record of police-civilian interactions, body-worn cameras can serve as a valuable tool for promoting transparency and building trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. Ultimately, the findings of this study contribute to the ongoing discourse on the role of technology in enhancing police-community relations and improving the overall effectiveness of law enforcement practices.
