Thesis Abstract
Abstract
Child abuse is a pervasive issue with detrimental effects on children's physical and psychological well-being. This preliminary investigation aimed to explore the relationship between stepchildren, community disadvantage, and physical injury in child abuse incidents. The study utilized a sample of child abuse cases reported to a child protective services agency over a one-year period. Data were collected on the type of abuse, the relationship of the child to the perpetrator, the presence of physical injuries, and the socioeconomic status of the community where the abuse occurred. Preliminary findings suggest that stepchildren are at a higher risk of experiencing physical injury in child abuse incidents compared to biological children. This relationship persisted even after controlling for other relevant factors such as the age of the child and the severity of the abuse. Furthermore, the study found that child abuse incidents involving stepchildren were more likely to occur in communities characterized by high levels of disadvantage, including poverty, high crime rates, and limited access to social services. These results highlight the complex interplay between family dynamics, community factors, and child maltreatment. The findings suggest that stepchildren may face unique vulnerabilities in the context of child abuse, potentially due to factors such as family stress, caregiver strain, and disrupted family relationships. Additionally, the association between community disadvantage and child abuse underscores the importance of considering the broader social context in understanding and preventing maltreatment. Implications of these findings for child welfare practice include the need for targeted interventions to support stepfamilies and address the specific challenges they may face in preventing child abuse. Additionally, efforts to reduce community disadvantage and improve access to resources and support services may help mitigate the risk of child maltreatment in high-risk neighborhoods. Future research should further explore the mechanisms underlying the relationship between stepchildren, community disadvantage, and physical injury in child abuse incidents to inform more effective prevention and intervention strategies.
