Abstract
Police torture and deaths in custody are significant human rights violations that have been reported in Nigeria. This research aims to investigate the prevalence, causes, and consequences of police torture and deaths in custody in Nigeria. The study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of reported cases with qualitative interviews with survivors, family members of victims, police officers, and human rights activists. The research will explore the factors contributing to police torture, such as poor training, lack of accountability, and a culture of impunity within the Nigerian police force. It will also examine the role of political corruption, societal attitudes towards law enforcement, and the influence of historical legacies of violence in shaping police behavior. Through in-depth interviews and surveys, the study will document the experiences of individuals who have been subjected to torture while in police custody, as well as the families of those who have died as a result of police violence. By giving voice to these marginalized groups, the research aims to raise awareness of the systemic issues within the Nigerian police force and advocate for policy changes to prevent future instances of torture and deaths in custody. The findings of this research are expected to contribute to the growing body of literature on police violence in Nigeria and inform future advocacy efforts aimed at promoting police accountability and respect for human rights. By shedding light on the experiences of victims and survivors, the study seeks to challenge the culture of impunity that allows police torture to persist and to promote a more transparent and accountable police force in Nigeria. Overall, this research seeks to highlight the urgent need for reform within the Nigerian police force to prevent further human rights violations and ensure that law enforcement agencies uphold their duty to protect and serve all citizens. Through a comprehensive examination of the root causes and consequences of police torture and deaths in custody, this study aims to bring attention to an issue that has long been overlooked and advocate for meaningful change to prevent future abuses.
