This study investigates the dynamics of organized crime within this sector through a case study of major container shipping lines operating across the Asia-Pacific and European corridors, where documented incidents of corruption, illicit vessel alterations, and supply-chain infiltration pose significant risks to stakeholders. The problem addressed centers on the insufficient empirical understanding of how criminal networks exploit governance gaps, port facilities, and maritime logistics to facilitate illicit activities such as cargo theft, falsified documentation, and facilitation payments, and how these activities propagate through complex transnational networks. The aim of the study is to elucidate the mechanisms by which organized crime sustains and expands its influence in international shipping, and to identify leverage points for disrupting these networks.
