Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The maritime sector in Nigeria faces significant security challenges that impact its operations and overall economic development. This research project aims to assess the various security challenges affecting the Nigerian maritime sector, including piracy, illegal bunkering, smuggling, and inadequate maritime infrastructure. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of these challenges, this study seeks to provide insights into the root causes of insecurity in the maritime domain and propose effective strategies to enhance security in Nigerian waters. Through a combination of literature review, stakeholder interviews, and data analysis, this research project will examine the current security situation in the Nigerian maritime sector and evaluate the effectiveness of existing security measures. The findings of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the complex security dynamics in the region and offer recommendations for improving maritime security governance, coordination, and capacity building. Key areas of focus will include the role of law enforcement agencies, international cooperation mechanisms, technological solutions, and regulatory frameworks in addressing security challenges in the Nigerian maritime sector. By identifying gaps in the current security architecture and highlighting best practices from other maritime regions, this research project aims to support policymakers, industry stakeholders, and security agencies in developing holistic and sustainable security strategies. Furthermore, the study will explore the socio-economic implications of insecurity in the Nigerian maritime sector, such as loss of revenue, increased insurance costs, and negative impacts on trade and investment. By quantifying the economic costs of insecurity, this research project seeks to underscore the urgency of addressing security challenges in the maritime domain and advocate for targeted investments in security infrastructure and capacity building initiatives. Overall, this research project will provide a comprehensive assessment of security challenges in the Nigerian maritime sector, with a focus on understanding the underlying causes of insecurity and proposing actionable recommendations for enhancing maritime security. By shedding light on this critical issue, this study aims to contribute to the ongoing efforts to secure Nigeria's maritime domain and promote sustainable development in the region.
