Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Electoral violence in Nigeria, particularly in the context of gubernatorial elections, has been a significant challenge that has marred the democratic process and undermined the credibility of elections. This research focuses on the case of Anambra State gubernatorial elections in 2003 and 2007, which were marred by widespread violence, intimidation, and electoral malpractices. The study aims to analyze the root causes, dynamics, and implications of electoral violence in Anambra State during these two electoral cycles. Using a qualitative research approach, data was collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and analysis of relevant documents and reports. The findings reveal that electoral violence in Anambra State was fueled by a complex interplay of political, social, economic, and ethnic factors. The competition for power and resources, weak institutional frameworks, and the proliferation of arms contributed to the escalation of violence during the elections. The study also highlights the role of political actors, including candidates, parties, and their supporters, in perpetrating violence as a means to influence electoral outcomes. Intimidation, vote-buying, thuggery, and manipulation of electoral processes were common tactics employed to gain an unfair advantage. Furthermore, the involvement of security agencies in some instances exacerbated the situation, leading to further unrest and insecurity. The implications of electoral violence in Anambra State were far-reaching, affecting not only the electoral process but also the socio-political environment of the state. The erosion of trust in the electoral system, the disenfranchisement of voters, and the perpetuation of a culture of impunity were some of the negative consequences observed. Moreover, the violence had a detrimental impact on peace and stability in the state, hindering development and progress. In conclusion, addressing electoral violence in Anambra State requires a multi-faceted approach that involves strengthening democratic institutions, promoting good governance, and fostering a culture of peace and tolerance. Political actors must uphold the rule of law, respect democratic principles, and prioritize the welfare of citizens over personal interests. By learning from the experiences of the past, it is possible to prevent the recurrence of electoral violence and ensure free, fair, and credible elections in Anambra State and Nigeria as a whole.
