Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The Design and Implementation of Online-Examination for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is a crucial step towards modernizing and streamlining the examination process in Nigeria. The UTME is a standardized test that determines admission into tertiary institutions in the country, and the transition to an online format presents numerous benefits and challenges. This research project aims to explore the design and implementation of an online examination system for the UTME, considering factors such as security, accessibility, and scalability. The research will begin by examining the current paper-based UTME system and identifying its limitations, including issues related to logistics, cheating, and result processing. By transitioning to an online platform, the goal is to address these challenges and improve the overall efficiency and integrity of the examination process. Security measures will be a primary focus, with the implementation of biometric authentication, encryption protocols, and monitoring tools to prevent malpractice and ensure the credibility of the results. Accessibility is another key consideration in the design of the online UTME system. Efforts will be made to accommodate candidates with disabilities and provide a user-friendly interface that caters to a diverse range of users. The system will be designed to support multiple devices and browsers, allowing candidates to take the exam from anywhere with an internet connection. Additionally, measures will be put in place to ensure a stable and reliable network connection throughout the examination period. Scalability is essential to the success of the online UTME system, particularly given the large number of candidates that take the exam each year. The research will explore cloud-based solutions and server configurations that can handle a high volume of concurrent users without compromising performance. Load testing and optimization techniques will be employed to ensure that the system can scale effectively to meet the demands of a national-level examination. Overall, the Design and Implementation of Online-Examination for the UTME project represents a significant advancement in the education sector in Nigeria. By leveraging technology to modernize the examination process, this research aims to improve efficiency, security, and accessibility for both candidates and exam administrators. The findings and recommendations from this project have the potential to shape the future of standardized testing in the country and inspire similar initiatives in other regions.

Thesis Overview

Design and implementation of online-examination of unified tertiary matriculation examination

Abstract

Registration for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, is organised by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This registration is conducted in all the states in Nigeria in a given period of the year. Many a times, the process is cumbersome, not organized and posses a lot of stress to students. So, the goal of this project is to provide a readily accessible and user-friendly system for students to register for UTME online and also to access the result of the examination online. This would be similar to other online registration forms, but it will also feature the following advantages; as a web-based system, students will be able to have access from any computer that has a web browser and is connected to the Internet to register for UTME, with a graphical interface, this system will be more user-friendly and intuitive to use. The introduction of on-line registration was an enormous improvement over the old, cumbersome paper-based method. In the course of implementing the software, HTML and Visual Basic 6.0 was used to design an online examination registration and result checking form for UTME.
