Thesis Abstract
In an increasingly digital world, the disparity in computer literacy levels among secondary school students remains a significant barrier to equitable access to opportunities in education and employment. Despite widespread availability of technological resources, many students exhibit limited motivation and engagement in acquiring essential computer skills, highlighting the necessity for innovative instructional strategies. This study aims to develop and validate a comprehensive framework for enhancing computer literacy through gamified learning models, thereby addressing the declining effectiveness of traditional teaching methods and fostering sustained student engagement. The specific objectives include examining the influence of gamification on students’ motivation and learning outcomes, identifying essential components of an effective gamified learning environment for computer literacy, and proposing a theoretical model that integrates gamification elements with instructional design principles. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to generate a holistic understanding of the impact of gamified interventions. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 300 secondary school students across three schools, with stratification based on gender, age, and prior computer experience to ensure representativeness. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-intervention assessments measuring computer literacy levels, motivation scales adapted from the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), and user engagement metrics derived from platform analytics. Qualitative data were obtained through focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews with students and teachers to explore perceptions, challenges, and contextual factors influencing gamified learning experiences. Validity and reliability of quantitative instruments were established via Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.85, and thematic analysis was used to interpret qualitative data. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, paired-samples t-tests, and multiple regression analysis to examine the relationships between gamification variables and learning outcomes, using SPSS version 28. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to test the proposed theoretical framework, illustrating how gamification components such as points, badges, leaderboards, and story narratives influence motivation and knowledge acquisition. The findings are expected to demonstrate statistically significant improvements in students' computer literacy scores post-intervention, with motivation mediating the relationship between gamified elements and learning gains. Qualitative insights are anticipated to reveal factors affecting engagement, including competitive versus collaborative game mechanics and the role of immediate feedback. This research contributes novel insights into the pedagogical integration of gamified learning models within computer literacy education, advancing a contextualized framework grounded in the Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) and Flow Theory (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990). The proposed model elucidates the mechanisms through which game design elements can be harnessed to foster intrinsic motivation and facilitate skill acquisition among secondary school students. The study’s findings are intended to inform educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers seeking to leverage gamification for digital literacy enhancement, particularly in settings where traditional instructional methods are ineffective. Based on the results, it is recommended that schools incorporate carefully designed gamified modules aligned with curriculum objectives, emphasizing feedback-rich and socially engaging game mechanics. Further research is suggested to investigate longitudinal effects of gamified interventions on computer literacy and to explore the scalability of the framework across diverse educational contexts. Overall, this study advances the theoretical and practical understanding of innovative pedagogies supporting digital competence development, providing a validated, adaptable framework to motivate and empower students in acquiring essential computer skills in the 21st century.
